But his journey to fame began in 1995 when he participated in the McDonald’s All-American held at Farragut Career Academy and won a national player of the year award. That same year, the nineteen-year-old entered for the 1995 NBA draft, got selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the fifth overall pick and became the first NBA player to be drafted straight out of high school in 20 years.

During his 21 seasons career in the National Basketball Association (NBA), he played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets before retiring in 2016.

Kevin Garnett’s Bio & Age

Kevin was born in the city of Greenville, South Carolina on May 19, 1976. His mom Shirley Garnett and his dad O’Lewis McCullough were never married, in fact, the relationship between his parents reportedly ended after he was born.

Garnett grew up with mother, two half-sisters and a stepfather, Ernest Irby, whom he never got along with. Although he developed a love for basketball when he was in Middle School, he didn’t play organized basketball until his first three years in high school at Mauldin High School, Mauldin, South Carolina, where he demonstrated his love for the game and exhibited extraordinary skills in the game by playing on the school’s basketball team. After his junior High, Kevin Garnett had to be transferred to Farragut Career Academy, Chicago, following second-degree lynching charge against himself and other students after a fight eschewed in the neighborhood between blacks and whites.

While at Farragut Career Academy, he still didn’t give up his love for the game, he joined the school basketball team and was soon named the National High School Player of the Year by USA Today after he led the school team to a 28–2 record. During his four years in High, he made an impressive record of 2,553 points, 1,809 rebounds, and 737 blocked shots. In High School, Kevin Garnett played alongside another talented student who later became professional basketball player Ronnie Fields.

After recording 18 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocked shots, Kevin was named the Most Outstanding Player at the McDonald’s All-American Game and subsequently became eligible for the 1995 NBA draft. He was also honored as one of 35 Greatest McDonald’s All-Americans at the 35th anniversary of the McDonald’s All-American High School Boys Basketball Game.

Career

He began playing professionally in 1995 after he got selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1995 NBA draft, making him the first NBA player to be drafted directly out of high school since 1975, as well as the youngest NBA player at the time.

After his first contract expired, Garnett agreed on a six-year contract extension with the Timberwolves worth $126 million. Many condemned the contract calling it a huge risk considering the huge sum of money involved. Popular analysts actually speculated that the deal would make it impossible for the Wolves to sign new players. The wolves, however, had so much confidence in the abilities of the young and talented player, who soon began to deliver.

That season, Garnett made an average of 18.5 points, 9.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.8 blocks, and 1.7 steals in every game. The Timberwolves finished the season with their first winning record in franchise history (45–37) and Kevin won his first All-Star.

Although Garnett was named to the All-NBA Second Team in the 2004–05 season, Timberwolves still failed to make the playoffs for the first time in eight years with a record of 44–38 and tension began to build, not for the team alone but also for the young player. The following season (2005-06) wasn’t any better, despite all of Garnett’s play, the team still recorded the second worst record since Garnett joined the franchise and the following season, the youngster had to be traded to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Sebastian Telfair, Al Jefferson, Theo Ratliff, and Ryan Gomes.

His Boston debut was in a match against the Washington Wizards and he recorded an amazing 22 points and 20 rebounds. In 2012, he agreed to a three-year contract extension with the Celtics worth $34 million. The following year, he recorded his 25,000th point in a 116–95 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

When the 2013 NBA Draft opened, the Boston Celtics and the Brooklyn Nets reached a deal to trade Garnett, Jason Terry and Paul Pierce for future first-round picks in 2014, 2016, and 2018 drafts respectively and that was exactly what they did and this deal saw Garnett at Brooklyn Nets till 2015 when he agreed to waive his no-trade clause in order to be traded back to Minnesota in exchange for Thaddeus Young.

He played 38 of the team’s first 45 games of the season but missed the entire second half of the season due to a right knee injury. Though Garnett wanted to play one more season with the Timberwolves, his knee injury wasn’t healing as fast as expected. He announced his retirement on September 26, 2016, after playing 21 seasons in the NBA.

After Retirement

Kevin Garnett has not been idle since his retirement. The following month after his retirement, he became a crew member on TNT’s Inside the NBA, and subsequently the host of his own segment, Area 21. In 2017, he became a consultant with the Los Angeles Clippers, he also consulted with the Milwaukee Bucks during the 2016–17 season.

During his playing days, Garnett was also part of the United States national team that went for the 2000 Summer Olympics where he won a gold medal.
