Keylor Navas is a Costa Rican footballer who was born on the 15th of December 1986. He currently plies his trade for Spanish football giants Real Madrid and the Costa Rican National team.

Biography (Age)

Navas started his professional footballing career at Saprissa where he made his professional debut on the 6th of November 2005. He remained the first choice goalkeeper at the club for his final 2 seasons winning six national championships and the CONCACAF champion’s cup back in 2005. Navas then moved to Spain in July of 2010 where he signed with a team in the Segundo Division in Spain called Albacete.

Keylor Navas was a regular performer at the Spanish club raking up 36 appearances out of a possible 42 in just his first season at the club. Despite his best efforts, that did not stop his team from being relegated from the division after they finished last on the table. He finally moved to La Liga, joining Spanish club Levante UD on what was officially a one-year loan deal in the 2011/2012 campaign. Navas went on to make his debut at the club on the 13th of May in 2012 in what was the last round of fixtures of the La Liga season, playing against Athletic Bilbao in a comfortable 3-0 win that ensured the Spanish club’s first ever qualification for the UEFA Europa League.

His exploits at Levante made the Valencian club sign Navas on a 3-year contract in July of that same year as a backup to Spanish goalkeeper Gustavo Munua. Despite being initially named a backup goalkeeper, Navas quickly established himself as the first choice goalkeeper of the club in the 2013-2014 season and was nominated as the league’s best goalkeeper alongside Atletico Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois and Malaga CF goalkeeper Willy Caballero. Navas went on to claim the prize and in March 2014, he made Spanish football history by becoming the first goalkeeper to win La Liga Player of the Month.

After his heroics at the 2014 World Cup with his native country Costa Rica, Real Madrid took advantage of the $12 million release clause in his contract to sign the Costa Rican on the 3rd of August 2014. The deal was a 6-year contract. He was first signed as a back up to club legend Iker Casillas and had to sit on the bench on his first competitive call-up in Cardiff against fellow Spanish club Sevilla.

He made his club debut on the 23rd of September against Elche. It was only when Real Madrid’s long-term keeper Iker Casillas departed in the 2015-2016 La Liga season that Navas was installed as the team’s undisputed number 1. He was also part of the famous failed swap deal between Man Utd and Real Madrid, a deal that involved Real agreeing to transfer Navas to United in exchange for Spanish number 1 David De Gea.

The move ultimately fell through when both clubs failed to meet up with the Spanish deadline. In his first season as number 1, Navas made history by becoming the first Madrid keeper to keep a clean sheet in 8 of his first Champions League Appearances. He became part of Real Madrid’s most successful team recently when the Spanish giants became the first team in 27 years to retain their European Crown in the 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 season.

Madrid won both the La Liga and Champions League in the 2016/2017 season and has continued their quest for an unprecedented third consecutive Champions League victory by Qualifying for the 2017/2018 UEFA Champions League final in Kiev with Navas playing a starring role in achieving that feat.

Navas’s position as a goalkeeper requires height as an edge. Though he stands at 1.85m which is around 6 ft. 1 inches, he is still considered short for an A-List goalkeeper. That notwithstanding, he poses a big obstacle to overcome with this height against football players of opposing teams.
