Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Bio, Religion

Not many people might have heard of the village called Sildi in Tsumadinsky District in Dagestan. But for Khbib who is of Avar heritage, that was where he was born on September 20, 1988, in Russia. After some time, he moved with his parents to the state capital Makhachkala and later to Kirovaul, where his father converted the ground floor of their two-story building into a gym. Students would come there to train and it was from there that his interest in martial arts began. The family later moved to Kiev, Ukraine when he was older and he began training as a Combat Dobro.

In his family, Khabib Nurmagomedov was raised alongside his siblings; an elder brother named Magomed and a younger sister named Amina. They are Muslims and he is still a Muslim till this day, projecting the faith in a positive light.

He began wrestling training at the age of 6 coached by his father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov: a Judo and Sambo champion and an army veteran. He wrestled at 12, switched to Judo by 15 and began training in combat Sambo by 17 as his father wanted him to compete in a gi jacket. As expected, Khabib often time got involved in street brawls before deciding to channel his energy into mixed martial arts (MMA).

He made his MMA debut in 2008 and from the start had 4 straight victories within a space of a month. He became inaugural Atrium Cup tournament champion and went undefeated for the next three years marking his M-1 Global debut, ProFC promotion appearance all in victories from technical knockouts or submissions. This was a record too impressive to be ignored by the Ultimate Fight Championship (UFC).

Khabib Nurmagomedov joined the UFC in late 2011 with a 6 fight deal to compete in the UFC lightweight division. Following this, he made his debut on January 20, 2012, at UFC on FX 1 with a victory over Kamal Shalorus who accepted he was no match for the Russian via submission in the third round of the duel. Khabib went on a winning streak defeating all that squared up to him either through unanimous decision, TKO or submission. The likes of Gleison Tibau, Thiago Tavares, Abel Trujillo, Pat Healy, Rafael Dos Anjos, Michael Johnson, and Edson Barboza have all come under the fury of his punches and kicks and in obedience became rungs in the ladder of his MMA success.

Khabib or the Eagle as he is sometimes called became the UFC Lightweight Champion on April 7, 2018, following his victory over Al Iaquinta after Tony Ferguson and Max Holloway pulled out of scheduled bouts with him due to injury and extreme weight cutting respectively. His championship fight against Iaquinta was a one-sided one as he dominated the whole of the fight over Iaquinta who weighed two-tenths of a pound over the championship weight limit.
