In 2009 he was pushed up to a senior team. In 2011, Casteels joined 1899 Hoffenheim II with a transfer fee of 1.08 million euros. He played 32 games for the club. Up to 2015, he played 39 matches for that club.

In2015, Koen Cateels sign a six-year contract with the Bundesliga club VFL Wolfsburg with the amount of 1.35 million euros. He settled himself as a first-choice goalkeeper of the team soon after. He saved the penalty of Xabi Alonso in the penalty shootout in the DLF super cup in 2015. The team won DLF Super cup.
