Kyle Anderson is a professional American basketball player who currently plays for the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Initially, he started his career by playing high school basketball and was named state player of the year during his senior year, after leading his team to two consecutive state titles. Though his height would have caused him to be boxed into the forward position, he is, however, notable for his ability to play different positions, especially the position of a point guard, all thanks to his father. He also declared for the NBA draft in 2014 and was selected by the San Antonio Spurs as the 30th overall pick in the first round of the draft. More details below.

Who Is Kyle Anderson?

Kyle .F. Anderson was born in New York City, on the 20th of September in 1993. He was, however, raised in New Jersey, North Bergen before his family relocated to Fairview where he also attended high school. Kyle has practically been involved in basketball as a sports right from his years as a toddler. In fact, he began playing the game three days before his very first birthday, the same day he started walking. By the time he was three years of age, he attended his first basketball camp. Luckily for him, his father was a respected high school football coach in New Jersey who helped train him to become a point guard. Considering the fact that Kyle was a very tall kid and also the smallest player in terms of his body frame, his father didn’t want him to be stereotyped into playing a particular position so, he was made to play with larger teammates on the  (AAU).

Kyle Anderson’s high school career was launched while he was studying at the Paterson Catholic High School. By then, he was already 6 feet 5 inches tall which made his coach to play him in the wing position, regardless of the fact that he possessed the skills to play the point guard position. Kyle spent two years at Paterson but he was later transferred to St. Anthony High School after the school closed down. In his remaining high school years spent at St. Anthony, he was instrumental to leading his team in getting 6.5 rebounds per game, 3.9 assists, 2.0 blocked shots, deflections and scoring 14.7 points per game. His coach also described Kyle Anderson as the “heart and soul of the team.” At an increased height of 6 feet 7 inches (2.03 m), Kyle still considered himself as a point guard regardless of the fact that he was often listed as a small forward. He was ranked number 1 as a small forward by, Rivals.com, and number 2 on Scout.com and ESPN.com.

College Career

For his college education, he got admitted into the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on September 19, 2011, where he also got the opportunity to play for the Bruins in Division I  basketball. On the team, he was positioned mainly as a power forward and did well to complete the season with averages of 9.7 points, 3.5 assists as well as rebounds of 8.6. He has once said that although being in a team managed by coach Howland was sometimes a tough one because of how strict he was, it brought out the best in him, even leading him to be the only player in his team to be ranked in the top 10 “Pac-12” in both assists and rebounds.

Adding to his winning streak, he and a teammate of his, , were the only players to appear on the midseason watch list for the John R. Wooden Award, Bob Cousy Award, and the Naismith College Player of the Year award. Kyle Anderson was also a finalist for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, given to the most outstanding college player.

Professional Career

Anderson Kyle was initially projected to be picked at a late first round, however, he was lucky to get selected by the San Antonio Spurs with the 30th overall pick. He later signed with the Spurs in 2014. On the team, he played more on the wing and sometimes as a power forward but rarely as a point guard. During the 2016-17 season, though he played a total of 72 games including 14 starts, his overall performance was lagging. The following season, Kyle Anderson became a restricted free agent. He later signed a four-year contract worth $37.2 million with the Memphis Grizzlies on the 9th of July 2018.

Looking at Kyle Anderson, one may become quite confused as to what his ethnical background really is. If you ever thought he was mixed, we can most definitely tell you that he has mixed genes. Kyle’s father, Kyle Anderson Sr., is originally from Jamaica while his mother, Suzanne Anderson, is half Jamaican-half Chinese. Her father was a Chinese who immigrated to Jamaica and later got married to a Jamaican woman (Kyle’s great-grandmother). He also has four siblings, two brothers, Jamar and Dueane; as well as two sisters, Brittany and Tai.

One thing that is synonymous with sports like basketball is definitely height. Not implying that average height athletes do not make it in the sports but the taller players are usually considered first when selecting potential additions to a professional team.  With Kyle Anderson, he has always been a tall kid, he stands at a full-grown height of 6 feet 8 inches (2.06 m), matched with a very athletic weight of 230 lbs(140 kg).
