Kyle Gass is a Grammy-Award winning musician, an actor and a filmmaker. He is one half of the music duo Tenacious D, the other half being his longtime friend and fellow actor-musician . The band was formed back in 1994 and has released at least 4 studio albums. Gass also has his own music band “the Kyle Gass Band” which he formed in 2011.

He was born Kyle Richard Gass on the 14th day of July 1960. He was born and raised in Walnut Creek, California and there, he attended Las Lomas High School. He played the flute in his school’s marching band and after graduating in 1978, he proceeded to study at the School of Theater, Film, and Television of the University of California, Los Angeles. In 1982, Gass joined the LA-based theatre group ‘The Actors’ Gang’ where he eventually met future bandmate, Jack Black.

Music Career

Kyle Gass serves as the main guitarist and back-up vocalist of the 2-man comedy rock/ hard rock band Tenacious D. He founded the band back in 1994 alongside Jack Black, the band’s lead vocalist, and rhythm guitarist. Before releasing their first album, the band worked on a 3-episode TV series The Adventures of Tenacious D (1997) which was broadcast on HBO from 1997 to 2000. They got signed to Epic records in 2000 and the following year, their self-titled debut studio album Tenacious D (2001) was released.

In 2006, Kyle Gass and his bandmate Jack Black wrote, produced and starred in their own film Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny. Though the film was not commercially successful, its soundtrack was released as the band’s second studio album The Pick of Destiny. Their third album Rize of the Fenix was released in May 2012 and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album marking the band’s first Grammy nomination. Several years later, the band’s fourth studio album Post-Apocalypto was released in November 2018.

Among other highlights of their over 2-decade career, Tenacious D received the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for their cover version of the 1984 hit single “The Last in Line” which was originally recorded by the heavy metal band Dio.

Kyle Gass marked his screen debut in 1988 in a television commercial. Two years later, he marked his feature film debut in the horror film Brain Dead (1990) after which he starred in another horror flick Jacob’s Ladder (1990). Other notable film credits of the 1990s include comedy films like The Cable Guy (1996), Bio-Dome (1996) and Bongwater (1997), Idle Hands (1999) and Cradle Will Rock (1999).

His acting career got even busier by the turn of the century as he starred in other films like Saving Silverman (2001), Evolution (2001), Shallow Hal (2001), The New Guy (2002), Elf (2003), Lower Learning (2008), Kung Fu Panda (2008) and Year One (2009).

The actor-musician has also starred in several television productions in the course of his career. He featured in the short series The Adventures of Tenacious D (1997) and the one-season long sitcom Tenacious D in Post-Apocalypto (2006). He equally had a recurring role in the short-lived sitcom High Road (2006). He created and starred in the animated YouTube series Tenacious D in Post-Apocalypto (2018) alongside his longtime career partner Jack Black. Back in 2009, Kyle Gass lent his voice to a character in the action-adventure video game Brütal Legend.
