A story started in south suburban Chicago and a poor black kid played the lead role. His was a story of poverty, struggle, despair, and hope. As he played around the predominantly farming area where he grew up raised by a single mother, he thought perhaps fate had predestined him to be a farmer like the others he saw around him. Little did he know that the day will come when he will be sought after and that his name will be on the lips of every football loving fan in the United States of America. That poor, black boy is Laquon Treadwell.

Born Laquon Malik Treadwell on June 14, 1995, he presently plays for the National Football League (NFL) side, Minnesota Vikings as a wide receiver. As he watches his young daughter grow into a woman, he is sure to remember that his own father, whose name is not known chose not to be a part of his and his other sibling’s life but rather abandoned them to suffer alongside their mother, Tami Treadwell. However, even though he doesn’t like to speak on the subject of his father, he has reconnected with him on a speaking basis.

The Vikings WB has five siblings – two sisters and three brothers whose daily bread became the responsibility of their single mother after their father left. Tami wanted more for her children, especially Laquon, who she had noticed had leadership qualities that should not be wasted on a farm. She reasoned that no opportunity would spring up from Ford Height and so she moved the family to University Park, three miles west of Crete when Laquon was nine years old (In fact, the family of seven had to move 15 times in 11 years in search of cheaper and more affordable accommodation).

Even though the decision to move didn’t sit pretty with Laquon Treadwell and his siblings, it was in University Park that he found football. He learned the sports and joined the University Park Lions in 2005 where he played fullback on offense and middle linebacker on defense at the age of ten. He was a prospect and everyone, including his coaches, loved him. When he missed the first game of the season because he had gone to see his grandmother in Ford Heights and couldn’t get a means to come back in time for the games, his coach, Alvin Coleman (coach of the University Park Lions) drove down to Ford Heights to pick him up.

He attended Crete-Monee High School in Crete, Chicago and continued his rich vein of form, shattering records while creating new ones as he played the sports he had come to love. As colleges and football teams scrambled for his signature, Treadwell committed to the Ole Miss Rebels, the football team of the University of Mississippi in November 2012. It was later found that the reason he chose Ole Miss over more prestigious colleges at the time was because of Anthony Standifer, his close friend who played as a defensive back for the Rebels.

After leaving Crete-Monee High School, his No. 6 jersey which he adorned while playing for the school’s team was retired in recognition of his excellent achievements in the sports and for the school. He enrolled at the University of Mississippi and played college football there.

Laquon Treadwell’s High School Career

Laquon Treadwell who played majorly as a wide receiver in high school and received several recognitions as an offensive player. He was named Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year and NWI Times Offensive Player of the Year as a junior. With his continued dexterity in the game as he led his school to a run of 14 victories without a loss, which culminated in their winning the Class 6A state title in his senior year, his part in that was also recognized. He was named NWI Times Offensive Player of the Year again and Chicago Tribune Player of the Year, plus all-state first team.

His ratings across all sports websites in the US was at the top of the pack. Rivals.com, Tom Lemming, and ESPN.com rated him No. 1 wide receiver, others rated him a 5-star recruit (he was even regarded as the No. 5 overall best recruit in the country). He ended his high school football career with 3,563 yards putting him at No. 2 on the list of receivers in Illinois prep history.

In 2013, Treadwell enrolled for college with the University of Mississippi and played college football with the school team – Ole Miss Rebels. By 2015 when he was drafted, his figure for receptions was 202 making him the all-time leading catcher in the school’s history, while moving up to seventh overall in SEC history as well.

He started on the front foot at Ole Miss and became the first player from the school to be named SEC Freshman of the Year in a season where he recorded 72 catches, 608 receiving yards, and five touchdown catches.

Professional Career

Instead of four years, Laquon Treadwell spent just three memorable years with Ole Miss before opting to enter the 2016 NFL Draft and was selected in the first round as the 23rd overall pick. His destination was the home of the Minnesota Vikings.

With his impressive high school and college resume, his rookie pro season in 2016 was underwhelming, to say the least with just one reception for 15 yards in nine games. Combined with the injuries he has had to battle with, it is rumored that the 2018 season may just be his last chance at redeeming himself for the Vikings.
