For most athletes, going to college on an athletic scholarship has more to do with their chosen sport than the course they are actually studying in school. A good number of them even eventually drop out to go professional. Lara Spencer’s story is the opposite as she pursued a career in her field of study, abandoning a career in athletics.
Lara is most known for her appearance as the co-host of ABC’s Good Morning America, a show she has been with since 2002. However, the television personality has also worked for other networks including her parent network’s rival CBS. She spent a number of years with WABC-TV as a presenter for their lifestyle segment, then another couple of years on, PBS’s Antique Roadshow.
Most recently, she has been the host of HGTV’s Flea Market Flip. In April 2018, the journalist revealed that she would slow down on her GMA appearances in order to devote more time to her career as a television producer.
Lara Spencer’s Bio
Spencer spent her life up to her teenage years at Garden City, a suburb of New York located in Long Island. She was born Lara Christine Von Seelen on June 19, 1969. Her education saw her attend Garden City High School and subsequently Pennsylvania State University where she enrolled to study Broadcast Journalism.
Before college, she was already an athlete in the area of springboard and platform diving. During her time at Pennsylvania, she became a nationally recognized competitive diver and was even named to the All American Athlete team in her senior year.
Following her graduation in 1991, she joined NBC’s page program in order to gain experience and make connections within the industry. She soon clinched her first job at a Tennessee local television station WDEF-TV, which was an affiliate of CBS. Here she fulfilled every possible role from reporter, editor, and producer to cameraman and news van driver.
After a year with the station, she moved on to News 12 and then WABC-TV two years later. Her biggest role yet came in 1999, when she was tapped as a national correspondent for ABC’s Good Morning America.
Besides her involvement in over 1600 episodes of Good Morning America from 2002 to 2018, the journalist has been on a slew of other talk shows, reality shows, game shows, and seasonal movies. Some of them include Rachel Ray, The Muppet’s, The $100,000 Pyramid, Piers Morgan Tonight, Gary Unmarried, The Wendy Williams Show, Antiques Roadshow, The Early Show and a host of others.
Lara Spencer’s work as a television producer has seen her create and executive produce It’s Worth What? for NBC. It was a game show that aired in the summer of 2011 and was hosted by Cedric The Entertainer. In 2012, she collaborated with HGTV to produce I Brake for Yard Sales, an interior design show. Spencer then followed this up with Flea Market Flip, a show that aired originally on HGTV and subsequently on Great American Country.
Lara has also tried her hands at writing with the release of two books, I Brake for Yard Sales (2012), and Flea Market Fabulous: Designing Gorgeous Rooms with Vintage Treasures (2014).

In the years that followed, the union produced two children. The first, Duff, was born in 2002, and the second, Kate, came in 2004. Fifteen years after their marriage, in March 2015, Lara and David announced that their marriage was over. They completed the divorce proceedings three months later.
The following year Spencer was set up on a blind date with businessman Rick McVey by a mutual friend. Rick is the CEO of the fintech company MarketAxess. They soon began to date, and in January 2018, Lara revealed that she had accepted the businessman’s proposal. They got married on September 1, 2018, in Vali, Colorado.
