Laura Marling Bio

Laura Marling was born on 1 February 1990 as Laura Beatrice Marling. She is the youngest of three daughters born to a music teacher and her husband Sir Charles William Somerset Marling.

Career

Marling began doing music at quite an early age as her amateur singer-songwriter father who ran a little recording studio, introduced her to folk music, shaped her musical taste and taught her to play the guitar from when she was as young as three. This was an experience she considers a bit of a blessing and a bit of a curse because according to her,  she couldn’t slot herself into any other genre.

By the age of 13, Marling began writing her own songs. Her first song was inspired by The Libertines. She revealed in an NY Times interview that the first record she ever bought was Macy Gray and that her father had insisted she listens to some good music and played her lots of songs by Joni Mitchell and Neil Young.

Aside guitar, Marling also learnt to play the bass, piano and a dulcimer.

After secondary school, Marling with the permission of her parents joined her older sisters in London where she eventually launched her music career.

For a start, she joined a country band led by Winston Marshall. At that time, Marshall ran a nightclub in London and Marling became part of it. She soon joined the original line-up of indie folk band Noah and the Whale as a background vocalist on their debut album Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down; she, however, left the group before the album was released in 2008 due to a dissolved relationship with the band’s lead singer, Charlie Fink.

In 2007, Marling appeared on The Rakes track Suspicious Eyes, before going solo. She collaborated with Mystery Jets as a guest vocal to their 2008 single Young Love and also with  Johnny Flynn.

Her debut album Alas, I Cannot Swim came in February 2008, and was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Prize. The album, as well as other subsequent singles, were released under Virgin Records. The follow-up to Alas, I Cannot Swim, titled I Speak Because I Can, was released on 22 March 2010, this time produced by Ethan Johns.

After attending her second gig, Jamie T invited her to tour with him. She has also toured with a number of other musicians like Adam Green. Her fourth album Once I Was an Eagle was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2008, 2010, and 2013, respectively.

Marling moved to Los Angeles in the spring of 2013 where she later set up a studio in 2016, according to her, setting up a studio in London is “too expensive”.

While in LA, Marling abandoned music, learnt Yoga and took up a job as a Yoga instructor but didn’t find fulfilment in her new job, she traced her steps back to music and made a huge return in 2017 with the album Semper Femina. The album earned her a Grammy nomination in the Best Folk Album category.

She has also won the Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist and is also a recipient of the NME Awards.
