The music star was born in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England to parents Karen Payne and Geoff Payne who are of English Ancestry. He has two older sisters named Nicola and Ruth. Liam was born prematurely which affected some of his vital organs and had to receive special treatment as an infant. He attended St Peter’s Collegiate School where he had to squarely deal with bullies by taking boxing lessons and he eventually completed his secondary education in one piece before moving to Wolverhampton College to study Music Technology. During his college days, the young singer started performing in his school, especially when they host football matches and he was also a member of the group called Pink Productions Theatre Company.

The singer stepped up his game when he auditioned for the first time in the season 5 of the X factor British Singing Competition and although his performance was brilliant, one of the judges, Simon Cowell sent him home on the grounds that he was too young and not yet ready. However, in 2010 he signed up again for the competition and though he was not able to scale through on a solo presentation, he was given the opportunity to be part of a band group which they called One Direction that emerged third place in the competition. The band was later signed by Syco Entertainment owned by Cowell and they are known to have been the only band after 58 years to top the Billboard 200 album charts with their first five albums which were ranked at number 1. As the fame of the band grew, so did the singers in it climb celebrity status. Also, Liam’s talent expands into songwriting and he is credited with writing most of the band’s song and songs for other other artists like the song I won’t break for singer Cheryl Cole.

In 2016, the band was said to have paused its activities with the respective singers going their own ways. It is rumored that the split is not permanent and there are hopes for a reunion in a couple of years. This, however, did not stall Liam’s career as he has done solo productions, remixed songs and collaborated with other singers like Juicy J, , , Quavo who was featured in his single Strip That Down, Steve Mac and Rita Ora with whom he released the song  For You in January 2018.

The talented singer in 2015 won the title Sexiest Man of the Year from Attitude magazine and in 2016, he won two awards from BMI London Awards for the songs Night Changes and Steal My Girl. He received two nominations in 2017 from Teen Choice Awards for Choice Summer Male Artist and Choice Male Hottie.
