In 1939, scientists faced a situation that shattered every medical research and the laws of nature itself when a five-year-old girl – Lina Medina, showed up in a hospital for a checkup. She was suspected to have a tumor growing inside her when her abdomen started swelling up. However, instead of confirming their fears of a dangerous disease, the parents of the young child were hit with the news that they were about to become grandparents and in case that didn’t sink in yet, it means five-year-old Lina was pregnant!

To say the revelation rendered everyone speechless would be an understatement and the doctors had to run a thorough check to make sure there wasn’t a mix up somewhere. What was the aftermath of this groundbreaking discovery that debunked all scientific teachings and who fathered the child? Get all these details and more as you keep reading.

Lina Medina’s Bio

Named Lina Marcela Medina de Jurado at birth, the woman who attained fame for simply becoming a mother was born on September 23, 1933. She was welcomed into the world in Ticrapo, Castrovirreyna Province, Peru, by her joyous parents – Tiburelo Medina and Victoria Losea, who were shocked out of their wits when at the age of five, it was confirmed that their daughter was carrying a child. The unsuspecting parents had brought their child to the doctors when they noticed her abdomen was getting bigger. After a series of tests were run on the child, the doctors had no choice but to break the unbelievable news that Lina Medina was expecting a child. In fact, she was already in her third trimester – seventh month, when it became clear that a baby was growing inside her.

Historic Birth

Dr. Gerardo Lozada and a team of other medical practitioners who confirmed Medina’s pregnancy were proved right when barely two months after the diagnosis, she was delivered of a healthy baby boy via a cesarean section. She was exactly 5 years, 7 months, and 21 days old at the time of the birth and the C-section was necessary considering her small pelvis. Dr. Lozada and Dr. Busalleu performed the surgery while Dr. Colareta administered anesthesia on her.

The newborn was named Gerardo, after Medina’s doctor and he weighed 2.7 kg (6.0 lb; 0.43 st) at birth. Consequently, Lina Medina was named the youngest birth mother in medical history and has held that rank to date.

How Does A Five-year-old Get Pregnant?

Her parents must have called it bluff when the doctors told them that their little child was pregnant as it is medically and naturally impossible, or so we thought. During the cesarean that led to the birth of her baby, doctors came about another shocker about Lina Medina – her sexual organs were fully mature at that young age following early puberty. Moreover, it was discovered that she got her first period (menarche) at eight months of age, although she was reported to have started menstruating at the age of three.

While it is obvious that at the tender age of five, Lina Medina had a ripe body of a woman and ready to conceive, this is not common and has never been seen in another case after her. Thus, no plausible explanation has been giving with regards to how a child that young could have gotten pregnant and delivered a healthy baby.

Who Fathered Lina Medina’s Child?

At first, Gerardo Medina grew up as Medina’s brother but at the age of 10, he learned that the person he thought to be his sister is in fact, his mother and she is a mere five years older than he is.

Once it became clear that the young Medina was pregnant, police swung into action to nab the man behind the pregnancy and in the process, her father became a suspect but after investigations, he was freed. The same thing happened with one of Medina’s siblings who had mental issues. In the end, the biological father of Gerardo Medina was never found as his mother couldn’t provide enough information to reveal his identity.

Where Is Lina Medina Now?

As the world’s youngest mother, Lina caught a lot of unwanted media attention but refused to grant interviews regarding her unusual motherhood. She currently lives in abject poverty in Little Chicago, a poor district in Peru and has refused to use her story as an avenue to get rich.

At 33, Lina married Raul Jurado with whom she had a son named Raul Jurado Jr. in 1972. Although Lina is still alive, the same cannot be said of her first child, Gerardo, who died in 1979 from a bone marrow disease. He was 40.
