The Spanish actor needs no introduction, the multi-talented entertainer is one of the Hispanic men who have left their footprints in the sands of Holywood time. In addition to acting, the veteran actor has also dabbled into film production.

Antonio started his acting career in his native home country – Spain, appearing in a few underground productions in lesser-known theaters and in street productions. Having had one dream shattered, he immediately accessed his options and decided that he wanted to become an actor instead. He went on to the College of Dramatic Arts in Malaga, Spain, and continued his education in the performing arts.

Gregorio Cortez (Banderas) and his wife Ingrid (Carla Gugino), who have two children – Carmen () and Juni (Daryl Sabara), are retired spies who work for OSS. The couple was called back into action when serving spies go missing and they set out to rescue them. When the Cortezs are captured by the villain, Mr. Floops, the children learned of their parent’s identity as spies, and have to become spies themselves to rescue them. The movie grossed $148 million at the box office against a $35 million budget.

Spy Kids received very positive reviews from critics with most considering it a great watch for the family – especially the kids. Critic aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 93% rating. Antonio Banderas got a nomination for the Kid’s Choice Awards for Favorite Male Butt Kicker for his role in the movie.

2. Pain And Glory (2019)

The life and choices that a movie director has made and makes finally catches up with him in this intriguing movie. Antonio Banderas features as Salvador Mallo and his performances in the movie earned him glowing praise from critics. The moviemaker also earned very glowing praise for the movie. Banderas won The Best Actor Awards at the Cannes Film Festival and also from the International Cinephile Society.

3. Shrek 2 (2004)

Shrek (Mike Myers) and his wife, Fiona () were both invited by her parents – King Harold () and Queen Lillian (Julie Andrews) to a royal banquet in the kingdom of Far Far Away to celebrate their marriage and upon discovering that his daughter and her husband were both Ogres, he visited a mysterious assassin – Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) to help him take care of Shrek. A series of events played out thereafter that had Shrek, King Harold, Puss in Boots, Donkey (), Fairy godmother (Jennifer Saunders) and her son Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) all scheming to win Fiona’s love.

The movie recorded gross earnings of $920 million at the box office against a production budget of $150 million. Critics generally loved the sequel to Shrek, and it did surpass the accomplishments of its predecessor; Rotten Tomatoes gave it an 89% rating with very positive reviews from seasoned critics. 4. Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown (1988)

This Spanish dramatic-comedy movie is one of those early films that began to announce Banderas as an actor to take note of. Antonio featured as Carlos, son of Ivan – who had just dumped his girlfriend, Pepa for an unknown woman and she is attempting to commit suicide. Pepa does all that is in her power to get Ivan back into her life and a lot of twists and turns happen all through the movie. The film won a few awards as the Best Foreign Film both in America and Italy and received several other nominations. The critically acclaimed film was included in the list of “The Best 100 Films of The World Cinema” in 2010 by Empire Magazine.

5. The Mask Of Zorro (1998)

This is one of Antonio Banderas movies that can be considered a classic. Don Diego de la Vega (), a nobleman in California transforms into the masked vigilante – Zorro, to fight against the oppressive government of Don Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson) in town. When Don Rafael learns that Don Diego was the masked outlaw Zorro, he had him arrested, killing his beloved wife, and took away his daughter to raise as his own.

When Don Diego was released from prison, he recruited a young thief, Alejandro Murietta (Banderas) to assume the responsibilities of Zorro and save the oppressed folks once again. The new Zorro now has to fight his own battles with the help of Don Diego. Movie critic aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie an 82% rating and though it generally received mixed reviews from critics, many gave it a thumbs up. The movie grossed over $250 million at the box office against a budget of $95 million.

6. The Skin I Live In (2011)

When plastic surgeon Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas) who has been discovered to be carrying out secret transgender experiments on humans was banned from doing that, he continues his experiments secretly on a woman he has held captive on his estate. A series of events happens thereafter that would consume Robert himself and a few that have crossed his path. The movie received mixed reactions from critics, with some criticizing the filmmaker’s direction/interpretation of the storyline as deviating from his usual captivating best, but others believe the film has a perfect melodrama storyline filled with suspense. It won the BAFTA Awards for the Best International Film and a few other awards.

7. Genuis (2018)

The show chronicles two different times in the life of Pablo Picasso (played by Antonio Banderas); first as a young artist who is still trying to figure out his talents, and secondly as a well-known artist trying to deal with the rise of fascism and the challenges that come with fame. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave the television series more negative reviews but singled out Banderas’ portrayal of his role as splendid and inspiring.

8. Philadelphia (1993)

This is one of the first mainstream movies that brought to the fore issues about HIV/AIDS, homophobia and homosexuality. Banderas played the role of Miguel Alvarez – the homosexual partner of Andrew Beckett (played by ) in this captivating legal themed movie. Beckett worked for a law firm, which terminated his employment when he was discovered to have HIV/AIDS, Beckett, in turn, sues the firm for wrongful dismissal and tried to hire homophobic attorney, Joe Miller () who initially declined, but later had a change of heart. The movie is based on a real-life occurrence. A box office hit, it grossed $207 million realized from a production budget of $26 million. Google users rate the film at 92%.

9. Desparado (1995)

El Mariachi (Banderas) is on the trail of the mob that killed his beloved and he would stop at nothing to bring them to book. He travels with a guitar case filled with guns and seeks revenge on his enemies, led by their boss – Mucho. He enlists some of his friends to help him out when he seemed overwhelmed by the counter firepower of Mucho’s men and he takes the fight to his adversaries.

Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a 61% rating and it received mostly negative reviews from seasoned critics who highlighted the film’s emphasis on extended gun battles and violence, without backing it up with a compelling storyline. MTV Movie + TV Awards nominated co-stars and Antonio Banderas for the Best Kiss award.

10. Assassins (1995)

Robert Rath () – the #1 go-to assassin is hired to kill a computer hacker named Elektra and the 4 Dutch buyers of her merchandize, but another assassin and a mentee of Robert known as Miguel Bain (Antonio Banderas) is also hired for the same job and beats him to the mark (target). Miguel is later hired to kill Robert and the two set out plans to execute their individual orders and outwit one another. Despite the thrilling storyline, Assassins ranks as one of Banderas’ worse movies. Critics gave it a B grade, on a scale of A to F.
