Lizzo Biography (Age)

Popular as Lizzo, the rapper was born Melissa Viviane Jefferson on April 27, 1988, in Houston, Texas. It was there that she was brought up until the age of 9 when her family moved to Detroit. She was brought up alongside two older siblings by parents who had their own businesses.

Lizzo began music since she was still a very young girl in her sixth grade when she began playing the flute after she was asked by her school’s band director if she was interested in learning the instrument.

By the time she was 14, she was already set to venture into music as a rapper and so with two of her classmates, she founded the Cornrow Clique which became her first rap group. Although her talent could not be disputed, she was not popular because she was different in many ways.

In 2005, Lizzo started college but unable to fit in and feeling she was trapped, she later dropped out and soon found herself homeless because she had no dorm again and her parents had relocated to Denver. Because of that, she had to sleep in her T-boned 1990s Subaru car.

She played the flute for Ellypsea which became her first real band in 2008. Apart from affording her the opportunity to push her music career, she also made use of the band’s rehearsal floor as her sleeping place sometimes. Unfortunately, the band retired in 2010, the same year she lost her father.

On the insistence of her mother, she later joined the family in Denver before moving to Edina where she continued her music. She would later form her band The Chalice and then GRRRL PRTY which was a local darling.

As she kept evolving, she later released her first solo studio album, Lizzobangers in 2013. Although it was critically successful, it was not much of a commercial success. It was followed by Big Grrrl Small World in 2015. This was also critically successful. In 2019, she released her single, Juice, ahead of her third studio album Cuz I Love You (2019). The single was both commercially and critically successful. The rapper also has 2 EPs and 3 collaborative albums to her credit.

Back in 2013, she took home the “Picked to Click” award for best new Twin Cities artist of City Pages. Later, she was named by Time as one of the 14 artists to watch for 2014.
