With a long-running and highly decorated television career behind her, Lorraine Kelly can be described as an icon. She is a broadcast journalist, TV host, writer, actress, and also a model. Born in Scotland, Kelly became well known to TV audiences in Britain when she began headlining her own TV show (Lorraine LiveGMTV with Lorraine in the 1990s. Following the takeover of the original channel GMTV by ITV, the iconic TV presenter had her show renamed to Lorraine in 2010.

Lorraine Kelly Biography

Lorraine Kelly was born on the 30th day of November 1959 in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. After spending her early childhood years in Glasgow, her family moved to East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire and there, she schooled at Claremont High School. After high school, she gave up an opportunity to attend university in favor of a career in media and broadcasting.

After working her first job at East Kilbride News, a newspaper in her local town, Kelly got hired as a researcher at BBC Scotland in 1983. The following year, she joined TV-am as a Scottish news correspondent. Her stint with TV-am lasted for nearly a decade and among other notable roles, she served as a co-anchor on the channel’s breakfast show, Good Morning Britain between 1991 to 1992.

Taking on a new challenge, Lorraine Kelly helped launch a new TV channel GMTV in January 1993. Among other notable roles, she is best known for headlining her own show (Lorraine LiveGMTV with Lorraine from November 1994 to July 2010. The show was originally launched as Nine O’Clock Live but following its soaring popularity, it was renamed to bear the name of its anchor. She launched another eponymous TV show titled Lorraine on the ITV network following the takeover of GMTV by ITV plc in 2010. Kelly also served as a co-presenter with Aled Jones on the ITV morning programme Daybreak between 2012 and 2014. Her departure from Daybreak in April 2014 was to afford her more time to focus on her main programme Lorraine.

Kelly’s hosting duties go beyond television as she has served in a similar capacity on other platforms. She has held several hosting gigs on the STV channel, the most notable of which is the STV Children’s Appeal which she has hosted since 2011. Back in 2010, she produced a 6-part documentary Lorraine Kelly’s Big Fat Challenge on the Biography channel (now the FYI network). She has also guest-starred on several British TV shows including the sitcoms Birds of a Feather (2014) and Murder in Successville (2017). She also had a role in the comedy film, Pudsey The Dog: The Movie (2014).

In addition to her brilliant TV career, Lorraine Kelly is also a regular contributor to several newspapers’ including The SunThe Sunday Post, as well as the Royal Air Force’s RAF News. She equally serves as a patron to numerous charity organizations. For her immense contributions to charity, she was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2012.

Kelly also holds an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Dundee and an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Edinburgh Napier University. Interestingly, she served as the rector of the University of Dundee from 2004 to 2007 and as such, she made history as the first female to hold that position. Kelly was honored with a special Scottish BAFTA award in November 2014, commemorating her illustrious 3-decade television career.
