Louise Minchin Bio

Louise Mary Grayson is the daughter of a Major in the Irish Guards of the British Army. She was born on the 8th day of September 1968 during the period Hong Kong was governed as a colony and British Dependent Territory of the United Kingdom. Thus, her place of birth is as British Hong Kong, where she lived until she was 5. Then she grew up living between Hampshire and London.

She received her secondary education at St Mary’s School, Ascot before proceeding to the University of St Andrew where she earned a degree in Spanish. For her love of language and knowledge, Louise traveled to many places including Chile and Patagonia – where her interest in presentations was sparked – working as an interpreter. Realizing she loves asking questions and deciphering what she wanted to do, she set out for a career in the media. She went ahead to study journalism at the London College of Communication. In 2014, Louise Minchin received an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of Chester.

Career

With enough quivers in her arrow, she started growing her resume. Louise Munchin spent a year in Argentina where she worked for the Latin American section of the BBC World Service, putting her knowledge of Spanish to good use. She has also worked for the Today programme, Radio 5 Live in 1998 where she presented many of the station’s programme as well as in many other local radio stations. She was part of the World Cup coverage for BBC News in 2006.

In time, Louise became a regular presenter on the BBC News Channel from September 2003 until April 2012, working on their various platforms and programmes including BBC One, BBC World Service, BBC Breakfast, BBC News 24, BBC Radio 4, BBC Sports, Sunday Life, The One Show, Real Rescues, Missing Live, You and Yours. Minchin collaborated with famous Rugby player and TV presenter Gethin Jones for the documentary series Crime and Punishment first aired in 2012.

Moreover, she was a relief presenter on BBC Breakfast between 2006 and 2007 before eventually working as one of the main relief presenters for the BBC News at One until April 2012. She is best remembered for her contribution to the show on BBC Breakfast. Although she initially stood in for an absent colleague in 2006, she has been associated with the show for more than a decade. She returned to Radio 5 Live as a co-presenter with Peter Allen of their Drive programme from November 2012.

While doing what she has grown to love and appreciate, Louise Minchin has had the privilege to interview personalities from David Cameron to Art Garfunkel, Will Smith, Sigourney Weaver and former Take That star Robbie Williams. Additionally, she has presented some of the world’s biggest news stories to millions of viewers including the capture of Colonel Gadaffi, the London bombings and the royal wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge; Prince Williams and Kate Middleton.

She had cameo appearances in two BBC series: spy drama Spooks and the Torchwood mini-series Children of Earth.

In 2016, Minchin was among the stars who competed in Celebrity MasterChef on BBC One finishing second. The others include Amy Childs, Sid Owen and Strictly Come Dancing pro, Gleb Savchenko.

Minchin is also associated with various charity organizations. She supports SOS Children’s Villages which provides shelters and families for orphaned and abandoned kids.

She is an amateur triathlete and competed in the standard distance event (1500m swim, a 40 km bike ride, and a 10 km run) at the World Triathlon Championships in Chicago on 19 September 2015. Minchin qualified for the team at the Dambuster Triathlon at Rutland Water on 15 June 2015 and went on to finish 71st out of 78 finishers at the Worlds. Moreover, she competed in a triathlon in the Patagonia area of Chile, South America on December 9, 2018.

Louise is also an author. Her book Dare to Tri: My Journey from the BBC Breakfast Sofa to GB Team Triathlete was released on May 3, 2018.

Louise married David Minchin, a restauranteur on 6th June 1998, a day she describes as one of the bests in her life. The couple has been blessed with two daughters, Mia (b. 2002) and Scarlet (b. 2005). They also have a pet Labrador named Waffle.

 

In 2011, after BBC Breakfast moved its location to the city of Salford, it was announced that Minchin would be taking complete charge of the show. At that, the family of four moved their home from London to the MediaCity in Salford, near Chester.

Following the birth of her first child whom she had through an emergency C-section due to the baby being breech, she was rushed back to the hospital a few days later in severe pain. It was discovered that her appendix had burst, leading to peritonitis. Nevertheless, she received adequate medical attention from surgeons and have since then made a full recovery.
