Born as Lucas François Bernard Hernández, the French professional football player is popularly known as Lucas Hernandez or simply Lucas. Lucas currently plays for the French national team as a left back or a central defender and also for Spanish Club Atlético Madrid.

Hernandez was among the 23 man squad selected to represent France at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and he made his world cup appearance for the first time in his career on the 16th of June 2018 in a match against Australia which ended in a 2-1 win for the Les Bleus.

Brief Bio

Lucas was born on the 14th day of February 1996 in the French city of Marseille. Born to a father who was a player at the time of his birth, you can be sure he was born into football and grew up loving the game. Showing great potentials, young Lucas was moved to Spain at the tender age of four and at the age of eleven, he joined Atlético Madrid’s youth team.

Hernandez is the first of two sons born to a former French footballer Jean-François Hernández who during his active days played for Olympique de Marseille, Toulouse FC, and FC Sochaux-Montbéliard. He retired from professional football in 2002 at the age of 33. François was a central defender and in his prime played for Atlético Madrid.

Lucas’ father reportedly abandoned his wife Laurence and two kids, thus, the boys were raised by their mom, but there isn’t much information online about their mother, where she is from and what she does.

His only brother Theo is also a professional footballer who plays the left-back position for Spanish club Real Madrid.

League Career

In 2013, while still playing in the junior team, the then Atlético Madrid’s manager Diego Simeone, invited Lucas to play in a La Liga match against Villarreal CF, however, he was benched all through the match that ended in a 1-1 draw.

He made his senior debut in April 2014 in the Segunda División B championship where he played with the reserves against Real Sociedad in a match that ended in a 0–1 loss. Lucas appeared in three other matches that season and by the end of the season, he signed a new deal that will keep him in the club until 2018.

Lucas Hernandez made his first-team debut in December 2014 against CE L’Hospitalet, the match which was for Copa del Rey’s campaign ended in a 3-0 win. His maiden appearance for the Spanish club came later that same month in a match against Athletic Bilbao, where he came in as Guilherme Siqueira’s substitute. The match ended in a 4–1 away win.

In August 2015, Lucas Hernandez renewed his contract with the club which will keep him with the Spanish side till 2019 and possibly more. His first appearance in the main team was in March 2016 at the UEFA Champions League, where he replaced Diego Godín in the extra time round-of-16 tie against PSV Eindhoven. The Spanish team eventually won 8–7 on penalties after the match ended goalless in regulation and extra time. He also came in as a substitute in the finals that ended in a shootout loss to Real Madrid.

International Career

Lucas Hernandez has also played for France. His first appearance for France was with the under-16 team and that was in 2012 when he played in a friendly match against Italy that ended in a 1-1 draw. Two years later, he played with the under-18 and under-19 teams.

In early 2018, he was invited to play with the senior by the team’s manager Didier Deschamps in a friendly against Colombia and then Russia. In the match against Colombia, he replaced Lucas Digne for the last 14 minutes of the game. Lucas was then selected as part of the squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

His world cup debut was on the 16th of June 2018 in a match against Australia which ended a 2-1 win.

His Wife

Lucas is not married nor does he have any children. However, he does have a girlfriend by the name Amelia de la Ossa Lorente.

In February 2017, Lucas trended online for the wrongest reason ever – he was arrested on account of domestic violence against his girlfriend. The duo both sustained injuries in what appeared like a fight between them and Lorente destroyed Lucas’car in the process.

They were both sentenced to community service and a mutual restraining order of 500 meters was imposed, Lucas signed up to it, Amelia de la Ossa Lorente reportedly wouldn’t sign.
