Mac McClung’s Biography

Matthew “Mac” McClung was born on the 6th of January in the year 2000 to Marcus and Lenoir McClung in Gate City, Virginia. He has an elder sister named Anna and brothers named Noah and Cam. The McClung’s family is an athletic one as the patriarch was a football player in his younger days, Mac’s sister Anna played soccer at the collegiate level and then we have Marcus who will possibly one day be the king of the basketball court. However, basketball was not the first sports he loved, as a child, he played football a lot following the footsteps of his father and in-line with the game being predominantly popular in Southwest Virginia where they resided. It wasn’t until his 7th grade that he made a switch to hoops following his enrollment into a local youth basketball league by his mum.

From this instance, he began to play B-ball in high school – Gate City High School, where he was coached by Scott Vermillion. As he devoted more time to the game, his interest in football began to wane and by his 8th grade, he completely gave up the pigskin sports. All the while he was making a transition from football to basketball, Mac McClung’s dad was silently in approval, more so his mom who was the initiator of it all.

Career Stats and Rankings

McClung was reputed as an acrobatic dunker while playing in Gate City High School for the Blue Devils. He scored a career-high 64 points against Dan River High School while playing in the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Region 2A West tournament. The game however ended in a loss for his team.

At the end of his junior season, Mathew totalled 29.0 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.0 steals per game which earned him the Southwest Virginia Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year award from the Bristol Herald Courier. The high points of his senior high school career were his surpassing of Allen Iverson’s VHSL single-season scoring record of 948 points in 25 games with just 20 of his, Gate City’s first state championship win against Robert E. Lee High where he netted 47 times in his teams 80 against the opposing team’s 65. This became a VHSL record number of points in a championship game. In all, McClung totalled 2,801 high school career points and earned another Southwest Virginia Player of the Year from the Herald Courier.

Prior to the end of his high school studies, Mac McClung committed to play varsity basketball with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights men’s basketball team of Rutgers University, he, however, had a change of mind and pledged his loyalty to Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team of Georgetown University.

The young baller enrolled at Georgetown on Jun 1, 2018, and has been phenomenal with his teammates. Mac McClung is dubbed the second-biggest dunking sensation behind Zion Williamson. In December 2018, precisely on the 22nd, he scored a season-high 38 points against the Little Rock Trojans of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Seeing his games, one will have no doubt that he will rank favourably when he is set to enter the National Basketball Association draft by the time he is graduating from college.
