The Black-American superstar was born in Lansing, Michigan on August 14, 1959. His birth name was Earvin Johnson Junior, he was the fourth out of seven children born to Christine and Earvin Johnson.
Johnson’s parents were very hardworking and they often did more than one job so that they can fend for their children. The young chap at some point also did menial jobs in a bid to contribute to his family.
Magic attended Everett High School where he played for the basketball team. At a very young age, Johnson developed a passion for basketball, he was a very skillful player who led his school team to win the state championship in 1977.
He earned his nickname ‘Magic’ after putting up a skillful and dramatic performance during the state championship.
Johnson also attended Michigan State University where he continued his basketball career. During his college days, Michigan State University basketball team were the leading champions; they won the National College Basketball championship. However, Magic won the MVP of the tournament.
Professional Career
After his graduation from the University, the outstanding upcoming talent was joined Los Angeles Lakers in 1979. After a remarkable performance in the first season, Magic signed a $25 million deal with the Lakers.
Magic soared so high in his career and recorded massive success with the Lakers. He played alongside famous players including Norm Nixon, Jamaal Wilkes, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

At the peak of his career in 1991, the Legend encountered a shocking incident which led to the sudden end of his successful career. Magic was diagnosed with HIV, this, however, became his nightmare and was hard for him to believe at the time.
Just a short while after the diagnosis, Johnson also discovered his wife Cookie was pregnant. Fortunately, his wife and son Earvin III tested negative.
The skillful player who won the heart of many fans, however, made a public announcement regarding his health status and also decided to retire so that people will not mock or despise him.
As they always say, the downfall of man isn’t the end of his life, Magic Johnson Junior retired from professional basketball but his standing record remained unbeaten for so many years.
He was invited by the USA basketball team to join the 1992 Olympics, his team put up an excellent performance that led them to victory. United States basketball team won the gold medal in the competition.
Furthermore, Magic was able to manage his case with all the medical attention he could get, he was able to stop the HIV from escalating to AIDS. He attributed his HIV infection to being careless and indulging in unprotected sex. In a bid to enlighten those who share the same fate, the young champ wrote a book called What You Can Do To Avoid Aids.
Despite his condition, Johnson’s love for basketball continued to grow he announced his comeback in 1992 and after playing a few games with the Lakers, he left because of health issues.
Magic Johnson wasn’t just a player, he also served as a coach for his club. First, he was appointed the vice president of the team and he eventually he became Lakers coach towards the end of ’92/’93 season, he finally retired from professional basketball in May 1996.
