In Wiesendangen, he began his youth career with the local club. He  e joined FC Winterthur as a member of the youth team in 2007. He was a member of the Under-18 team and then the second team. Akanji prefers to play defensively at center-back, but because he can play with either foot, he has also been successful on the right and left. He was in Winterthur’s starting eleven in the 2014–15 Challenge League after appearing in two games for them the previous season. Dortmund are reportedly interested in signing Akanji in the January transfer window, while Liverpool are more open to a summer deal.
