Mark McGrath’s Bio, Age

Mark Sayers McGrath was born on March 15, 1968, in Hartford, Connecticut. His family later moved to Newport Beach in Orange County, California where he attended Corona Del Mar High School. His music career dates back to his days at the University of Southern California. There, he formed the music band Shrinky Dinx alongside Rodney Sheppard, Stan Frazier, Murphy Karges, and Craig Bullock. The group landed a recording contract with Atlantic Records in the early 90s and subsequently, the band name was changed to “Sugar Ray” following the threat of a lawsuit from the manufacturers of the classic Shrinky Dinks toy.

Sugar Ray released its debut album Lemonade and Brownies in April 1995, however, it was not commercially successful. The band eventually attained superstar status in 1997 following the release of its first major hit song “Fly” which was contained on its second album Floored. The song enjoyed massive airplay in the US and it topped the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart for 4 straight weeks. “Fly” is also credited for the eventual success of the entire album.

Mark McGrath’s personal popularity soared in the late 1990s just as his band Sugar Ray continued to achieve more success. The talented singer took proper advantage of his new-found celebrity status as he featured in several major magazines including Rolling Stone and Spin. He equally attended several major award shows and was named the “Sexiest Rocker of the 1998” by People magazine.

In 1999, McGrath’s band Sugar Ray trumped its past achievements with the release of a third studio album 14:59, which attained triple-platinum certification and remains the band’s best-selling album yet. This was followed up by the release of a self-titled 4th album in 2002 and the band’s 5th album In the Pursuit of Leisure in 2003. However, both albums were met with a lukewarm reception.

Following the apparent decline in his music career in the 2000s, Mark McGrath made a smooth transition to TV hosting. He joined the cast of the long-running news show Extra as an anchor/correspondent in September 2004. He appeared as a guest judge on American Idol (2005) and also served as the host of the reality TV series Pussycat Dolls Present during its 2-season run.

In July 2008, McGrath took a hiatus from television as he returned to work on a 6th studio album with Sugar Ray. The album Music for Cougars was released in July 2009 but it did not achieve much commercial success. He made a return to TV in September 2010 when he got the hosting job for the syndicated version of the game show Don’t Forget the Lyrics!. Though shortlived, his stint on the show turned out to be one of his most memorable roles on television. The multi-talented singer also served as the host of season 2 of the karaoke game show Killer Karaoke in addition to several acting roles.

While McGrath’s television career prospered, his band Sugar Ray experienced some tough years as several of its members left the group. By 2011, only 2 original bandmates were remaining, McGrath and Rodney Sheppard and together, they recruited a number of new members. The band embarked on a couple of successful tours and equally headlined several sold-out shows. However, they were not able to release any new material as they were embroiled in a legal tussle with 2 former members of the band – Murphy Karges and Stan Frazier.

In the summer of 2015, Mark McGrath eventually released his first solo project, an EP titled Summertime’s Coming. He currently hosts his own show Mark McGrath’s 120 on Sirius XM’s music channel. In early 2018, McGrath featured in season 1 of reality competition Celebrity Big Brother finishing in the 2nd runner-up position.

McGrath has 2 children (twins) with his wife, a son named Lydon Edward and a daughter, Hartley Grace, born on April 29, 2010.
