Mark Teixeira had a well decorated professional baseball career in the MLB. In his 14 years in the league, Teixeira played as a first baseman for four teams, however, he is best remembered for his time with the New York Yankees which he led to the 2009 World Series Championship title. His name has gone down in history as one of the most prolific hitters the MLB has ever seen.

The three-time All-Star and five-time Golden Glove award winner officially retired on the 2nd of October 2016. His career home run was 409 as he became the fifth switch hitter to achieve the feat in MLB history. As with most pro athletes, Teixeira became a sports analyst shortly after retirement.

On the 11th of April, 1980, Teixeira was born as Mark Charles Teixeira. Though born in Annapolis, Maryland, his parents Margaret Canterna and John Teixeira would come to raise him in Severna Park, Maryland. His baseball career began during his days at Mount Saint Joseph High School.

Teixeira was so good at baseball that the Boston Red Sox drafted him right from high school, however, he turned down the offer preferring instead to play college football at Georgia Tech. As a college player at the university, Mark Teixeira won the Dick Howser Trophy given to the national collegiate baseball player of the year.

And then came the 2001 MLB Draft where Mark Teixeira would be selected fifth overall by the Texas Rangers. In 2007, Teixeira left the Rangers and joined the Atlanta Braves where he’d come to play for just one season, 2008/2009. During his time with the Rangers, Teixeira won two Silver Slugger Award and was named the 2005 All-Star team.

Mark had just one season at the Braves and then a brief stint with Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim before the New York Yankees came calling with a big offer in 2009. Mark accepted and went on to enjoy the most successful season of his career winning the 2009 World Series.

From then on, injuries greatly plagued Mark’s career including a 2012 wrist injury that required surgery to fix. In 2016, at the end of his huge contract with the Yankees, Mark Teixeira brought his career to an end, hanging his cap and gloves for good.

Mark Teixeira earned enormously from his baseball career. His first contract signed with the Texas Rangers in 2001 was worth $9.5 million over a period of 4 years. He was later signed to a two-year $15.98 million contract that kept him at the side till 2007. For the 2008 season, the Braves signed him to a one-year, $12.5 million contract.

Mark signed his biggest contract by December 2008, an 8-year $180 million deal with the Yankees which came with a signing bonus of $5 million. The deal gave him an annual average salary of $22.5 million. In 2016, his last year on the contract, he made it to of the world’s highest-paid athletes at #74 with an annual earning of $23 million, and half a million USD of that came from his endorsement deals with Nike, Rawlings, Steiner Sports and more.

Mark Teixeira is married to Leigh Teixeira (nee Williams). The couple met during their college years at Georgia Tech. A Georgia native, Leigh attended high school in Georgia. After Mark graduated from college, he got married to Leigh on the 7th of December 2002. Since then, the couple has remained inseparable, supporting each other over the years. They haven’t given the public any reason to believe that their union isn’t going on smoothly.

Their family includes three children, they are sons Jack Gordan and William Charles, and daughter Addison Leigh. The family has since made their home in Greenwich, Connecticut. Mark and his wife are hugely involved in charitable efforts. In the year 2006, they set up the Mark Teixeira Charitable Fund. The Fund provided support to 6 scholarships in the Dallas–Fort Worth area.
