Trumbo was born on January 16, 1986, in Anaheim, California and he began playing baseball in his high school years in Villa Park, California. At Villa Park, he was a pitcher and infielder, and for his dexterity in the game, he emerged the 2005 High School All-American having a hit of .425 with an impressive 10-2 with a 2.20 ERA on the mound. His professional career, however, started with the Los Angeles Angels where he was selected in the 18th round (533rd overall) of the 2004 MLB Draft.

Trumbo could not make it to the league until September 11, 2010, when he debuted as a pinch hitter for Mike Napoli, another American professional baseball first baseman and designated hitter (DH) who played with the Los Angels of Anaheim from 2006 to 2010. He then made his first All-Star team in 2012 after hitting his first career home run on April 12, 2011. The same year, he scored six RBIs on two three-run home runs in a game against the Denver-based Colorado Rockies. His clear display of prowess led to his selection as the 2012 Home Run Derby by AL captain Robinson Cano. Trumbo continued with the Angels all through his 2013 season where he batted .234/.294/.453 in 620 at-bats.

Mark Trumbo’s 2014 season was with the Arizona Diamondbacks, also known as the D-backs. The Phoenix-based professional baseball franchise bought him from the Angels in a three-team trade and with them he was able to hit his 100th career home run against the Rockies. Trumbo ended the season with a .235/.293/.415 in 328 at-bats despite suffering from a stress fracture in his left foot that led to him being placed on a 15-day disabled list.

On June 3, 2015, he was traded, alongside the Mexican-American professional baseball pitcher Vidal Nuño, for Wellington Castillo and Dominic Leone and Gabby Guerrero of the Seattle Mariners. He later ended with the Baltimore Orioles in December 2015 after the Mariners traded him for Steve Clevenger.
