Marko Livaja was born on August 26, 1993 in Split, Croatia. From the Under-15s to the senior squad, he has represented his country at every level. He began his youth soccer career in 2002 with the NK GOK youth program. He joined Inter Milan’s academy in 2011, and made his professional debut with the club in 2012.

Early Years Marko Livajo

Livaja began his career with lower-tier Croatian clubs GOK Katel Gomilica and NK Omladinac Vranjic before joining the Dinamo Zagreb Academy in the summer of 2008. However, before registering with Dinamo, he received a call from his local club, Hajduk Split Academy, a long-standing Dinamo rival, and relocated there. He was promoted to the entire Hajduk team in early 2010.

Marko Livaja was transferred to Internazionale in 2010, and he was loaned to Swiss club FC Lugano in 2011. In the summer of 2011, he was loaned to Cesena once more in a €250,000 deal from Hajduk Split. In the 2012–13 season, Livaja made his debut against Pescara in the first match of the season. During the first half of the season, he featured in six Serie A games without scoring a goal. In European games, Livaja saw increased playing time.

Atalanta

Livaja was loaned to Atalanta on January 31, 2013, with Inter keeping half of his registration rights. On February 10, 2013, Livaja made his debut for the new club against Catania Calcio and scored his first two goals for them on Matchday 26 against A.S. Roma. On disciplinary grounds, he was left off the team list for Atalanta’s match against Sampdoria in April. On April 7, 2013, he made his debut against his former club Inter Milan, coming on as a second-half replacement.

Rubin Kazan

Livaja signed a five-year contract with Rubin Kazan on May 15, 2014. The Russian Premier League team spent up to €6 million on him. Rubin Kazan loaned him out to Serie A club Empoli on August 31, 2015. His time did not go as planned, with Livaja scoring only once in 18 appearances for the Azzurri, four of which he started.

Las Palmas

On July 14, 2016, Livaja signed a deal with La Liga club Las Palmas until June 2020. Later that day, on August 22, he made his debut, scoring his first goals as Las Palmas beat Valencia 4–2 at Mestalla Stadium. Livaja made his Copa del Rey debut on January 10, the following year, in the return leg of the round of 16 against Atlético Madrid.

Loan to AEK Athens

Livaja was loaned to AEK Athens on July 1, 2017, for an initial loan price of €200,000, with a purchase option of €1.8 million for the summer of 2018. According to many reports, AEK’s administration has agreed to sign the Croatian winger, who is currently on loan from UD Las Palmas, in the summer of 2018.

On March 22, 2018, AEK chose to activate his €1.8 million optional transfer clause, and the player would allegedly earn €700,000 per year until the summer of 2021. On January 20, 2019, he began the scoring in a comfortable 3–0 home win over Asteras Tripolis. Three days later, he came in as a substitute and scored twice in a 5–0 home triumph over AO ChaniaKissamikos in the Greek Cup round of 16. On the last day of the season, May 5, 2019, he scored in a 3–0 away triumph over Levadiakos.

He scored and assisted as AEK defeated Universitatea Craiova to go to the 2019–20 Europa League play-off round. However, despite his goal, the tie finished 3–3 on aggregate, and AEK were eliminated on away goals. On December 18, Livaja assisted AEK in securing a crucial 2–1 home win against Asteras Tripolis when a slick passing play involving Nenad Krstii and Paulinho was finished off with a one-touch finish by the Croatian international 45 seconds into the second half.

On February 17, 2021, Livaja was released from his AEK contract on request after being considered surplus to requirements owing to his reluctance to accept a contract extension.

Hajduk Split

Livaja joined Croatian club Hajduk Split till the end of the season on the same day his AEK contract was cancelled.  In 17 games for Hajduk, he has seven goals and eight assists, helping the team qualify for the 2021–22 UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying stages. Hajduk announced on June 9, 2021, that Livaja has signed a new deal with the club until the summer of 2024. Marko Livaja is named Best Footballer in Croatian First League by Team Captains on December 21, 2021.

International career

Croatia coach Zlatko Dali picked the uncapped Livaja in his squad for the friendly vs. Portugal (1–1 draw) and the Nations League fixture against Spain on August 20, 2018, as a consequence of his great performances with AEK Athens. After a three-year hiatus, Dali summoned him for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification matches in September 2021. He scored his first international goal against Slovenia in a 3-0 win.
