Marshon Brooks’ Biography

Brooks was born MarShon Scitif Brooks to Darlyn Brooks and Freddie Woods on the 26th of January, 1989 in Long Branch, New Jersey. He lived in the beachside city with his family until he was about six years old when they decided to move down south to a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia called Stone Mountain.

Marshon Brooks received most of his education in the nearby city of Tucker, attending Tucker High School where he was notably a mainstay of its basketball team. After graduating high school, Brooks enrolled at Providence College where he found it hard to impose himself on his teammates and break into the team, as he barely featured in his first two years of college. By his junior year, however, Brooks’ role increased and he became a major contributor to his side as he averaged 14.2 points a game.

As a college senior, his impact became even more significant as he averaged 24.6 points per game to lead his team in scoring as well as in rebounding which earned him a position on the 2011 John R. Wooden Award 20 national finalist list. Brooks finished his college career with a total of 1,629 points and was placed ninth on his school’s all-time scoring list. He further garnered third-team Associated Press All-American and Fourth Team Fox Sports All-America selections.

NBA Career

Marshon Brooks’ exceptional senior college year performances culminated in him being selected with the 25th overall pick by the Boston Celtics in the 2011 NBA Draft. After snapping him up, the Celtics immediately traded Brooks to the New Jersey Nets for another player as well as a future draft pick.

Brooks enjoyed an impressive start to his NBA career as he earned an appearance in the 2012 BBVA Rising Stars Challenge before going on to average 12.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in 56 games. Despite his points tally being the third best among rookies, Brooks finished 10th in the Rookie of the Year voting before being named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. He went on to spend one more season with his hometown team before he was traded to the Boston Celtics in July 2013.

Brooks’ time in Boston encompassed just half of the 2013-14 season before he was again on the move. He managed 10 appearances in that time, averaging 3.1 points and 1.9 rebounds while also playing for its development league affiliate, the Maine Red Claws before he was traded to the Golden State Warriors as part of a three-team deal that also included the Miami Heat in January 2014. Brooks spent just over a month with the Warriors, playing only 7 games where he averaged 1.9 points per game for the team while also going on assignments for the Santa Cruz Warriors, before he was shipped out again, this time to the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2014.

Marshon Brooks found some playing time in LA, appearing 18 times and averaging 6.4 points per game. At the end of the season, he joined the Sacremento Kings for the 2014 NBA Summer League but after failing to secure a significant deal, he decided to head abroad, signing for Italian side Emporio Armani Milano. He spent one full year with the team, playing a total of 40 games where he averaged 13.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. When his deal with the Milan-based club ended, he moved to China to play for the Jiangsu Dragons.

Brooks remained abroad until March 2018 when he secured a 10-day contract with NBA team Memphis Grizzlies. A month later, after impressing the team’s coaching staff, the Grizzlies signed him up to a multi-year contract.
