Marten Elco de Roon (born March 29, 1991) is a Dutch professional footballer who now plays for Atalanta in Italy and for the Netherlands national team. Sparta Rotterdam, SC Heerenveen, and Middlesbrough were among his previous clubs. De Roon was born in Zwijndrecht and grew up in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, where he was a member of ASWH’s youth squads. He moved on from ASWH to Feyenoord and Sparta Rotterdam’s youth teams.

On March 27, 2010, De Roon made his Eredivisie debut for Sparta Rotterdam, starting against Twente at De Grolsch Veste. In the 2009–10 season, he made three appearances in the Eredivisie. SC Heerenveen of the Eredivisie confirmed the signing of De Roon on a three-year contract in April 2012. De Roon was signed by Atalanta in Serie A in July 2015.

De Roon joined the newly-promoted Premier League side Middlesbrough for a reported £12 million transfer fee on July 4, 2016. On November 5, 2016, in a 1–1 draw with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, he scored his first goal for his new club, a 91st-minute equalizer.

De Roon re-signed for Atalanta for an unknown price on August 10, 2017. He established himself as a starter under Gian Piero Gasperini, and helped the club finish in a record third place in the 2018–19 season, earning them a position in the 2019–20 UEFA Champions League group stage. In the Coppa Italia semi-finals, he also scored a volley in the 58th minute against Fiorentina. Atalanta would go on to win the tie 5–4 but lose in the final to Lazio. On September 18, 2019, he made his Champions League debut against Dinamo Zagreb.
