Bio, Age

Martina Navratilova was born Martina Subertova to Mirek and Jana Subertova on the 18th of October 1956 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Her father Mirek was a ski instructor while her mother Jana was an accomplished gymnast and tennis player who also worked as a ski instructor.

At around the age of three, Navratilova’s parents divorced and her mother married Miroslav Navratil. Her daughter took her stepfather’s surname but added the -ova suffix from her former surname to come up with the name she is known as today. Navratilova’s stepfather was responsible for teaching her how to play the game as he became her first ever tennis coach. At around the age of 15, Navratilova won her first ever amateur tournament, the 1972 Czechoslovakia national tennis championship before later turning professional a year later.

In 1974, Martina Navratilova won her first professional singles title in Orlando. The following year, she reached the finals of two major singles tournaments; the Australian Open and French Open but only managed runner-up spots. She, however, teamed up with Christine Evert, the player that beat her at the French Open final, to win the French Open women’s doubles title, her first major title. Both players teamed up again to win the 1976 women’s Wimbledon doubles title before Navratilova was able to get her first solo tournament win at Wimbledon in 1978 as she went ahead to dominate the game in the years to come.

Martina Navratilova’s Net Worth

Martina Navratilova, according to Celebrity Net Worth, is said to have an estimated net worth of $15 million. The 5 feet 8 inches (1.73 m) tall player, who was awarded the 2003 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award, was able to make her money through her earnings from tournament victories as well as through other business endeavors that included designing tennis wears.

It has been said that Navratilova’s net worth could have been much more than it is today if not for her openness about her sexuality which was at the time frowned upon. Despite being one of the most high profile and successful players of the time, Navratilova was not able to land any lucrative endorsement deals because of this. She also lost a huge amount of her earnings to her former partner, Judy Nelson, who sued her for palimony when their relationship abruptly came to an end.

Who is Her Wife (Partner)?

Martina Navratilova is married to her longtime girlfriend, beauty pageant winner turned model and then businesswoman, Julia Lemigova. The couple began seeing each other in 2006 before eventually getting engaged in September 2004 in the biggest way possible. Navratilova proposed to her wife while she was being interviewed during the U.S Open.

The tennis legend, who has 18 Grand Slam titles to her name revealed she had mulled about it for so long before deciding to do it at the place she felt most comfortable at for the whole world to see. With everybody at the New York’s Arthur Ashe stadium looking at the jumbotron, Navratilova knelt down on one knee and unveiled a diamond-studded ring to ask for her partner’s hand in marriage, which she accepted. Lemigova, a mother of two daughters from a previous relationship, and Navratilova later tied the knot on the 15th of December, 2014, at a small private ceremony at the Peninsula hotel in New York.

Julia Lemigova was born Yulia Alexandrovna Lemigova on the 20th of June 1972 in the Soviet Union. Her father was a Red Army colonel. In 1990, Lemigova finished first runner-up at the 1990 Miss USSR beauty pageant but was, however, later elevated to the winner after the original winner was disqualified for being married. Lemigova then represented her country at the 1991 Miss Universe pageant where she managed a second runner-up finish. After her beauty pageant career, Lemigova moved to France where she opened and runs a well-being, skin care, and spa line.
