Marvin Lewis is an NFL head coach with the Cincinnati Bengals, he has been the team’s head since 2003. Before taking up the job as Bengals’ head coach, he served as Baltimore Ravens’ defensive coordinator from 1996 to 2001, during this period, he helped the team win Super Bowl XXXV.

Biography (Ethnicity)

Lewis was born in McDonald, Pennsylvania, on the 23rd of September 1958 to an Africa-American couple Vanetta and Marvin Lewis Sr. His full is Marvin Ronald Lewis. His late father worked in a steel mill and his mom is a registered nurse who later became a nurse practitioner.

Marvin is one of his parents, three children, he has two sisters. His father Marvin Lewis Sr. passed away in 2014 at the age of seventy-eight. Lewis loved the game of football right from when he was young and he got a chance to express his love for the game during his years at Fort Cherry High School where he played with the school’s football team as a safety and later as a quarterback.

He was also on the wrestling team and played baseball during summers. After high school, he decided to continue as a football player at Purdue University before he got a scholarship to Idaho State University where he played college football.

Lewis played the linebacker position and won the All-Big Sky Conference honours for three years in a row. He bagged both his first degree and masters from Idaho. He was inducted into the Idaho State University’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2001 and in 2012, he was named Idaho State Alumni of the Year.

Coaching Career

It was while studying for his masters’ degree at Idaho State that Lewis decided to try out coaching after the school’s football team gave him an offer. Thus, he started his coaching career at Idaho State as a graduate assistant before serving as the team’s linebackers coach for 4 years (1981–1984).

During his time with the team, they won the NCAA Division I-AA Championship. Lewis would later serve as Long Beach State University’s assistant coach from 1985–1986; he served under the same capacity in the University of New Mexico from 1987–1989 and at the University of Pittsburgh from 1990–1992.

He began his NFL coaching career in 1992 as a coaching intern with both the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs. This was before he was hired by the Pittsburgh Steelers to serve as the team’s linebackers coach. He was part of the Steelers’ staff team who lost Super Bowl XXX.

In 1996, the Cleveland Browns (now Baltimore Ravens) hired Marvis as their defensive coordinator and he remained with the team (1996-2001). He later served in the same capacity in Washington Redskins before serving as an assistant head coach.

Marvin Lewis landed his first head coach position in 2003 when Cincinnati Bengals hired him as a replacement to Dick LeBeau and he has remained with the franchise till date (fifteen seasons). He has led the team back to back in 8–8 finishes in 2003 and 2004 respectively.

In 2005, the Bengals recorded their first winning season as well as their 1st AFC North division title in 15-years. He has led the team to 5 straight playoff appearances between 2011 and 2015.

Lewis became the first Cincinnati Bengals coach to be named coach of the year by the Associated Press after Paul Brown. He also holds the record as the Bengals head coach to record the highest wins.

Marcus is following in his father’s footsteps – after playing college football at Indiana State as a linebacker between 2008-2011, he spent 2013 as an assistant on the University of Cincinnati coaching staff team before joining his father at Bengals as a coaching staff. He is currently the team’s Defensive Quality Control coach.
