Biography

Marwin Javier Gonzalez was born on the 14th of March, 1989 in Puerto Ordaz, Bolivar, Venezuela. As a young boy, Gonzalez learned to play the game of baseball from his father, Mario Gonzalez, a huge baseball enthusiast who was also a coach and scout. As the story goes, Gonzalez’s father worked tirelessly to shape his son’s career path in baseball. He was reported to be very strict when it came to his son as he offered him no preferential treatment on his team.

After having garnered a lot of interest for his talents in his home country, Marwin Gonzalez, who could play in all positions, was signed as an international free agent by the Chicago Cubs as a 16-year-old amateur in 2005. He went on to join his new team for a short mini-camp in Puerto Cabello, Venezuela before he was assigned to a team in the Arizona Rookie League. However, following a poor showing where he hit .198 in 24 games, the Cubs sent him to the Dominican Republic to continue his development. Between that time and 2011, Gonzalez played for a number of minor-league outfits in Boise, Daytona Beach, and Oklahoma City, among other places before the Boston Red Sox selected him from the Cubs through the 2011 Rule 5 draft before immediately trading him to the Houston Astros for Marco Duarte.

Marwin Gonzalez went on to make the Astros’ Opening Day Roster in 2012 as he slowly became a pivotal part of the team because of his ability to play anywhere across the field. In 2017, he and the Astros won the American League before going on to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games in the World Series to win his and the Texas-based team’s first ever World Series title.

Marwin Gonzalez’ Family

Marwin Gonzalez is not the only member of his family who is deeply involved in baseball even though he happened to be the only one to make it as a professional. Gonzalez’s brothers; Mario Jr. and Leonard, both learned to play the game at a young age from their father but failed to make the cut for different reasons. Mario Jr. is said to have reached Class A level before he suffered an injury that led to his early retirement from the sport. Leonard, on the other hand, never got to sign a professional contract so he moved on to other things.

Aside from Marwin his son, Mario Gonzalez Sr. has helped develop numerous other talents who have gotten to play in the Major League. Some of them are Víctor Martinez, the former designated hitter for the Detroit Tigers, Carlos Hernandez, a former Los Angeles Dodgers catcher, and German Marquez, the starting pitcher for the Colorado Rockies.

Wife

Marwin Gonzalez is happily married to his beautiful wife, Noel Gonzalez (nee Glover). Not much is known about the couple’s relationship, but from what we can gather, Gonzalez met his wife in 2008 when he was playing for the Peoria Chiefs, a Chicago Cubs minor-league affiliate. Noel was able to stick with him through thick and thin as he was bounced around from one minor league team to another before he was able to land his big payday when he joined the Astros in 2005.

Today, Gonzalez and his wife, who graduated from Pekin Community High School in Pekin, Illinois in 2006, reside in Houston with their three children and a pet dog.
