Biography

Master P was born Percy Robert Miller, the oldest of five children to his parents, on April 29, 1967, in the Calliope Projects in New Orleans, Louisiana.

He attended Booker T. Washington High School and Warren Easton High School where he played basketball and earned a scholarship to attend the University of Houston. A few months into his freshman year, Master P dropped out of college. He, however, later transferred to Merritt College in Oakland, California, where he majored in Business Administration. During this time, he inherited $10,000 from a malpractice settlement from the death of his grandfather which he used to open his first business, a record store called No Limit Records in Richmond, California.

In 1990, following the killing of one of his brothers, Master P decided to fully enter the music business. He started recording his own music with his first release being “Mind of a Psychopath” (1990) with the group The Real Untouchables (TRU) which comprised of his other brothers; C – Murder and Silkk the Shocker and a number of other artists who kept coming and going. The tape was released on cassette and sold from the trunk of his car.

In February 1991, Master P released his debut album titled “Get Away Clean” followed by “Mama’s Bad Boy” in April 1992 and then “The Ghetto is Trying To Kill Me” in March 1994. For his fourth album, he signed a distribution deal with Priority Records which saw the sales of his records and popularity increase drastically. He went on to sign artists like Mystikal and Mia X before releasing his fifth and sixth album, “Ice Cream Man” (1996) and “Ghetto D” (1997) which together sold tens of millions of copies along with those of his new artists and the TRU group.

In the later years, while still releasing music, Master P began to diversify his portfolio, venturing into clothing, stocks, real estate, movie production, cable television network, restaurants, among many other things that propelled him to become the 10th highest paid entertainer on Forbes’ 1998 list. By 2009, Master P earned up to $661 million to make him the richest person in hip-hop at the time. He is, however, today said to be worth around $250 million.

Master P was married to former rapper Sonya C who is best known for being an original member of the rap group TRU. She released one solo album in 1993 titled ‘Married to the Mob’ after which she reportedly abandoned her career to raise her children.

Together, the couple has seven children while her husband has two more from other relationships. After 24 years of marriage, Sonya filed for divorce from her husband, citing irreconcilable differences. It was further revealed that the couple had already been separated for a few years. The two immediately got embroiled in a messy and well-publicized divorce battle as Mrs. Miller demanded a heavy settlement, telling the judge that she put her career and life on hold to look after her husband’s home while he was out philandering with numerous women, some of which resulted in extramarital children.
