Mats Hummels Biography
Mats Hummels was born Mats Julian Hummels on December 16, 1988, in Bergisch Gladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. His parents are Hermann Hummels, his father, and Ulla Holtho, his mother. His father, Hermann was also a while his mother, Ulla, was a sports journalist – little wonder then how he turned out to be such a fine soccer player. Hummels has a younger brother, Jonas Hummels, who also played soccer but retired due to a career-ending injury which he had while playing the game.
Hummels was keen on playing soccer and aspired to play in the forward position at a very young age. He joined the youth team of German club, FC Bayern Munich following his family’s relocation to Munich when he was six years old as his father got the job as the coach of the club’s youth team. He started with the team when he was fourteen and he was handled by his father but that did not accord him any preferential treatments as he had to put himself through a lot of hard work to merit his place in the team.
At times when he was not sharp in his form, he found himself on the bench as he watched others show him what the rewards to more hard work could be. Another thing that happened to him under his father’s watchful eyes was that he was molded into the defense-minded player that he is today, despite aiming for the strikers’ role while joining the club. Mats Hummels rose through the youth ranks o FC Bayern Munich to become one of the most sought-after defenders in world soccer today. He is highly rated among his peers and fans alike for his athleticism, consistency, strength in the air, and technical abilities and being a German player, he has drawn comparisons to the legendary Germany defender, Franz Beckenbauer. Hummels has the ability to read a game and can both play in the in the defensive midfield position and also as a central defender.
After growing through the youth team of Bayern Munich which he joined when he was only a six-year-old under the tutelage of his father, he signed his first professional contract at the age of 18 which was a four-year contract on December 19, 2006. He played for the reserves for one year before he was called up to the senior squad. His first game in the Bundesliga was Bayern Munich’s 5-2 demolishing of 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the final game of the 2006-07 season.
In order to get more game time, he went on a loan deal to Bundesliga rivals, Borussia Dortmund midway into the 2007-08 season. His decision proved to be the right one as he became a regular for Dortmund, partnering Neven Subotić, who also came in newly into the club, in heart of the team’s defense. His importance to the club was shown as Dortmund made a move to sign him on a permanent deal and got their man after dishing out the sum of €4 million. He won several titles and cups with Dortmund, including some against his former employers, FC Bayern Munich.
He rejoined Bayern Munich in 2016, amid interest from other leagues including the English Premier League (EPL). Hummels was called up to the Germany national team and he made his debut on May 13, 2010, against Malta which Germany won 3-0. Her sports interest were in cycling, soccer, polo, and jogging. She wanted to be a sports journalist and it was so as she became the first woman to run the commentary of a soccer game on German TV.
