Matthew Montgomery Barkley is the birth name of Matt Barkley who was born in Newport Beach, California on the 8th of September 1990. He was born to his father, Les Barkley, who is an insurance business owner, and his mother, Beverly Barkley.

Matt is not an only child as he has two siblings whose names are Sam and Lainy Barkley. His football potential began to unravel itself when he was still a young lad and he unleashed it in high school.

Barkley went to Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana and played football to the fullest. He was the first player to start as a quarterback in his freshman year for the school since Todd Marinovich.

In his junior year, Barkley scooped the Gatorade National Male Athlete of the Year award. He was also named Gatorade National Player of the Year in the same year 2007.

His high school football career saw him dominate the all-time rankings for passing yardage, not only in his high school but also in the whole of Orange County at the time he was graduating in 2008.

Having been rated a five-star recruit by some sports websites in the country, Matt Barkley opted for the University of Southern California (USC) even though many thought he would go to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

He chose USC because he had committed himself to the school a year earlier – a decision which was influenced by his family which had an affinity with the college – his father attended the USC and played water polo there.

He played as a quarterback for the USC Trojans for four years between 2009 and 2012. Even when it was thought that Barkley would declare for the 2012 NFL Draft, he decided to stay on with the team for his senior year and informed his then coach through a Christmas gift on which he crafted the words “One More Year.”

After graduating from college, Matt Barkley was drafted in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft and was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles as the 98th overall pick.

He was the third quarterback on the team and was also third in the pecking order behind. His first taste of NFL action was in the game against the Dallas Cowboys where he came on as a substitute for Nick Foles who had to leave the field due to an injury.

He joined the Chicago Bears in 2016 after a brief stint with the Arizona Cardinals in 2015. He is currently on the roster of the Cincinnati Bengals after signing a two-year contract in 2018.

This came after he joined the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 and had an inactive season on his second stint with the Cardinals in the same year – 2017.
