Matt Nagy is the current head coach of the Chicago Bears. Before signing on with the Bears in January 2018, Nagy served as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Eagles and as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Nagy was a former player. Before taking up a coaching career, he played American football in high school, college and professionally for the Columbus Destroyers, Georgia Force,  Carolina Cobras and the New York Dragons, all of the Arena Football League (AFL).

His Biography

Matt was born in Dunellen, NJ, on the 24th day of April 1978. He attended Manheim Central High School, Pennsylvania, where he played high school football and was the team’s star quarterback. During his high school career, the Barons went 26-2.

After high school, he played college football at Delaware by the end of which he had recorded 8,214 career passing yards. Kansas City Chiefs General Manager, Brett Veach was his teammate at Delaware.

At the end of his college career, Matt was signed by the New York Dragons of the Arena Football League, AFL, as a street free agent. He played with the team and when he was not on the active roster, he served as the team’s color commentator for radio broadcasts.

After spending two seasons with the Dragons (2002, 2003), he moved to the Carolina Cobras. In early 2005, he moved again to Georgia Force to replace injured quarterback Jim Kubiak. He would later lead the team to the ArenaBowl XIX. During the 2006 offseason, he was traded to the Columbus Destroyers. The next season, he led the team to ArenaBowl XXI but they, unfortunately, lost to the San Jose SaberCats in the championship game.

Matt Nagy was with the team for two seasons before the AFL folded in 2009.

High School and NFL Coaching Career

Nagy began his coaching career with his high school team as an assistant coach. He then served as a quarterbacks coach at Cedar Crest, Lebanon, Pennsylvania. while at  CCHS, he introduced several play tactics from his college days at Delaware.

He also served as the offensive head coach of the Junior Varsity. Between 2008-2009, Matt served as the offensive coordinator for Palmyra Area High School football team –  the Palmyra Cougars.

Matt Nagy began his NFL coaching career in 2009 as a coaching intern in Philadelphia Eagles under coach Andy Reid. In August of the same year, the franchise signed him to replace injured Kevin Kolb, who played as the team’s backup quarterback at the time.

The NFL terminated his contract the next day after it was discovered that his contract with the AFL was still valid (even though the league had folded by this time). The Eagles did not re-sign Nagy but allowed him to continue as a coaching intern. In 2010, he was promoted to the position of a coaching assistant and in 2011, he became the team’s offensive quality control coach.

In 2013, Matt Nagy became the quarterback coach for the Kansas City Chiefs under coach Andy Reid, who signed a new contract with the Chiefs. After three seasons, he was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2016. In December 2017 coach Reid gave up play-calling duties to Matt and under him, the team ended the regular season 4–1 and an average of 28.6 points.

In January 2018, the Chicago Bears hired Nagy as the team’s head coach, making him the 16th coach in the history of the team. In making up his coaching team, Matt Nagy hired the likes of Brad Childress as his senior offensive consultant, Brock Olivo as assistant special teams coordinator, Brian Ginn (his Delaware teammate) and Bill Shuey (his colleague at Eagles) as quality control coaches and finally his ex-Dragons teammate Mike Furrey to serve as the team’s wide receivers coach.

Matt is happily married to his high school sweetheart Stacey with whom he has four children – all boys. Nagy told Chiefs website, that they tried for a girl but got twin boys instead. Their sons are Brayden, Tate, Jaxon, and Jett.

Other Facts

1. Nagy is an only child and his parents separated when he was very young, that notwithstanding, he says he has a very close relationship with both of his parents.

2. Football is life to him, he can’t imagine a life without the game of football.

3. Matt though considered not an outdoor person, says he would love to learn how to fish and hunt.

4. His favourite vacation location is the Carribean, where he could see the water and put his feet in the sand.

5. Matt’s favorite food is chicken quesadilla from The Cat’s Meow – a typical themed restaurant located in Manheim.
