There is nothing as rewarding as staying true to one’s dreams and aspirations; it just has a way of paying off in the long run. This is the story of many people we now celebrate; they are out in the open and have become our celebrities because they dared to pursue their dreams and never gave up even in the face of several oppositions and challenges. This is also the story of one of U.S finest singers, songwriter lead singer and sometimes guitarist for the American rock band “Cage the Elephant,” Matt Shultz.

Before his emergence as one of America’s finest rock band lead singers, Matt did several odd jobs to survive and here is his story.

Matt Shultz Bio, Age

Matthew Ray Shultz was born in Bowling Green, Kentucky on the 23rd of October 1983 where the musician and his older brother grew up in the Bowling Green neighborhood of Kentucky. His father Brad Sr. was also a musician. His parents separated when he was very young and his mother dated his football coach, for this reason, Matt Shultz left the team.

Shultz is from a poor home, he and his older brother were sometimes teased by other children in their neighborhood and school as they called them “poor boys”. Matt in an interview recalls how his dad; a long-distance truck driver would hand them clothes from older cousins which they wore to school, and how when the children in school chanted “poor boy” into their ears, they responded by singing “People talkin’ shit, they can kiss the back of my hand,.”  These experience would later become an inspiration to his future band’s debut song.

After high school, Matt did several odd jobs from construction plumber to working in a sandwich bar, to telemarketing, all in a bid to support himself. After working as a construction plumber for some time, he said he felt if he didn’t quit that job the very next minute that he would be stuck with the job for the rest of his life, thus, he left and picked up another job as a telemarketer. After a while on his new job, he just felt it was time for him to take the bull by the horn and go after his dream.

Music Career

Shultz gathered some high school friends, with his older brother and together they formed Cage The Elephant band in 2006. This was not the first time they were in a band group. In high school, they were all involved in a band “Perfect Confusion” and even released a self-titled LP in 2005. Asides from this, Matt Shultz was also in an experimental punk band called “Left Nostril” back in middle school.

The group adopted the name Cage The Elephant as the band’s name following an incident that happened in 2006. According to Matt Shultz, a mentally challenged man approached the band after a show hugged him and kept repeating the phrase “You have to cage the elephant” over and over.

Following their impressive performance at the 2007 South by Southwest music festival, the band signed with Relentless Records. Before their first album was released in 2008, they relocated to London, England and between 2008 and 2015, the band released four studio albums. Their first album Cage the Elephant was a combination of funk, classic rock and blues music.

Their second album Thank You, Happy Birthday, which came three years later (2011) was more of punk rock. Their third album Melophobia (2013) which came a result of the team’s joint effort to find a musical identity for themselves earned them a Grammy Award nomination as Best for Alternative Music Album in 2015. Their fourth studio album Tell Me I’m Pretty was released in December 2015 and it earned them the Grammy Awards for the Best Rock Album at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. Their latest album is a live album entitled Unpeeled, released in July 2017.
