He was an American actor, comedian, and TV host popularly known for his role as Lt. Colonel Henry Blake in the American war comedy-drama series, M*A*S*H.

Edgar McLean Stevenson Jr. was born on the 14th of November 1947 in Normal, Illinois. While much isn’t known about his early childhood education, reports have it that he had his secondary school education at the college preparatory school, Lake Forest Academy.
On completion of his high school education, he joined the United States Navy to serve the nation for a brief period of time in line with family traditions.
After his brief stint at the Navy, he opted to attend Northwestern University where he eventually bagged a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts.
During his college days, he was a renowned member of the Phi Gamma Delta (Fiji) fraternity, which made him really popular among his peers in school. His popularity earned him the job of assistant director of athletics at the university upon completion of his studies.
From 1950 to 1959, McLean Stevenson held a series of jobs, ranging from that of a radio host in Dallas to serving as a medical supplier, an insurance clerk, a seaman, and a press secretary for the presidential campaign of his cousin, Adlai Ewing Stevenson II.
In 1961, he decided to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy after his cousin suggested he take up a career in show business.
The following year, he had his theatre debut in The Music Man before he moved to New York City where he made several appearances on stage in theatres as well as on television commercials.
Within a short period of time, he transitioned into a full-blown comedy writer. This saw him write several skits for That Was The Week That Was and The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.
Half a decade later (in 1966), he decided to delve into acting and went on to guest star in the ABC sitcom, That Girl, which led to him being selected by ABC to play the role of Michael Nick Nicholson in the 1969 sitcom, The Doris Day Show.
His big break finally came in 1972 when he got cast to play the role of Lt. Col. Henry Blake in M*A*S*H – Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. The role earned him an Emmy nomination in 1973 and a Golden Globe award in 1974.
The following year (1975), he asked for his contract to be canceled so he can focus on higher-paying roles. Subsequently, McLean Stevenson pulled off a good number of roles in works like The McLean Stevenson Show, Hello Larry, The Golden Girls, and Dirty Dancing to name a few.
