His Mexican parents entered the United States illegally before later getting their papers. He was brought up alongside his brother, Robert Garcia in Oxnard, California.

Growing up in a neighborhood that was known for its gang activities, he had his eyes on being a cop at first before he came to become a boxer. His father was an amateur boxer, he left Mexico as a result of poverty and settled in the US where he worked picking strawberries alongside his wife.

The younger Garcia attended Pacifica High School from where he graduated in 2006 before later moving to the Ventura County Police Academy. In spite of the fact that he graduated, he did not serve as a police officer as he decided to take to the ring instead.

Boxing Career

Although he was born into a family that was no stranger to boxing, Garcia initially had no interest in the combat sport. In fact, he only went to the gym when he was young to be with his friends. Without knowing what he wanted to do at first, he later decided that he would become a police officer before he eventually embraced boxing.

With a father that began as a boxer and a brother who fought as a professional boxer and then a boxing trainer, Mikey Garcia started out as a boxer when he was 13 years old. Although he was not training at the time, his elder brother signed him for a boxing competition which ended with him loving boxing and the thrill of competing soon got him keeping on the gloves.

Garcia went on to have his first professional boxing match in 2006 against Herrera Mendoza which he won in a unanimous decision. The next fight was won against Andrew Gannigan in a knockout. By January 2014, he had already slugged it out in the ring 34 times winning all with neither a loss nor a draw.

As a result of a legal dispute with his promoter, the next time he was going to fight again from that point in 2014 was in 2016 when he took on Elio Rojas whom he defeated in a total knockout. After that fight, he defeated Dejan Zlatičanin to win the WBC lightweight title, then Adrien Broner, followed by Sergey Lipinets to clinch the lineal light welterweight titles, and then Robert Easter Jr. whom he defeated to retain the WBC lightweight title.

Named as one of the best active boxers, pound for pound boxers by The Ring, the boxer who is popular as boxer-puncher has thus far taken part in 39 fights winning them all.
