Many pop stars and celebrities get permanent ink to externalize their inspirations. One of the more iconic and symbolic tattoos in recent memory is the one on Nick Jonas’ forearm. The piece was done in 2013, and there was a lot of buzz about what it meant and why it was so special.
The Meaning of Nick Jonas Tattoo
At first look, you can easily mistake the group of symbols for some sort of hieroglyphic or extra-terrestrial relic. To an uninformed onlooker it appears to be nonsense, or something too deep for an outsider to understand. It is cryptic by design, and without further explanation is a bit confusing, but when explained it makes perfect sense, and fits both Nick Jonas and the Jonas Brothers’ brand.
The meaning of this tattoo is quite simple and straightforward. The tattoo appeared first on his Instagram page in 2013 with the caption, “God is greater than the highs and lows.” From the image of the tattoo, it’s not hard to sort out the symbols. G represents God, then the “greater than” symbol (>) followed by an apex ∧ and a ∨, representing the highs and lows.
This is to accompany his “Mercy” tattoo from earlier in the year, which also has a clear personal and spiritual meaning for Nick Jonas. The Jonas brothers are famous for their Christian beliefs. A popular topic during their early years was the purity rings the group wore, signifying chastity until marriage. This and his “Mercy” tattoo fit the same mold, but are a more mature form of expression.
On top of the religious implications of the tattoo, The Jonas brothers released their album V soon after the ink was done. The V in Nick Jonas’ tattoo makes reference to the album. While this may be unintentional, it was certainly a reminder for most fans, keeping their eyes on the upcoming album. It was a little publicity at the time, but the staying power is in the meaning of the tattoo itself. It is a constant reminder to Nick Jonas and all of his fans, that God is greater than all. Although there may be good and bad times, God is always watching, and trumps all of the experiences of this world.
