Nick Pope’s Career

He began his career with Ipswich Town’s youth set-up at the age of ten and stayed with the club until he was discharged at the age of sixteen. He joined the non-league team Bury Town in 2008 after being released by Ipswich. Pope established himself as a capable player at that level after challenging and temporarily replacing Marcus Garnham. He wore the number one shirt for Bury Town in a number of first-team matches after making his debut for the club at the age of 16. Pope was praised by manager Richard Wilkins as “the most naturally brilliant player to progress through the ranks at West Suffolk Sports Academy and Bury Town” and “I honestly believe Nick Pope can go all the way to the top.” Pope also competed for West Suffolk College and was a part of an England Colleges squad.

Athletic Charlton

On 24 May 2011, Charlton Athletic signed Pope after scouts noticed him during a 2–1 victory over Billericay Town. He was then summoned to Charlton for a trial. After impressing staff during a trial, he was recruited to a two-year contract following an agreement between the two clubs on a compensation package that included Charlton hosting the Suffolk club in a pre-season friendly ahead of the 2012–13 season. Pope was also paid by Charlton to study sports science at the University of Roehampton, in addition to other studies he had planned to do at the University of Nottingham prior to signing with Charlton. Pope signed a new two-year contract with Charlton on 7 February 2012.   He made his Charlton and professional debuts on 4 May 2013, as a 71st-minute substitute for David Button in Charlton’s 4–1 home triumph over already-relegated Bristol City in the Championship.

Pope signed a new three-year deal with Charlton in September 2013, stating that “it’s a huge club, so having a stable long-term future is something you seek for as a young player.” Pope signed a new four-year contract with Charlton on 5 June 2014, ensuring his future with the club until June 2018.
