Norman Powell is an American-born professional basketballer who well known for his hard work playing for the Toronto Raptors of the NBA. A 2nd-round pick of the 2015 NBA draft, Powell was originally selected by the Milwaukee Bucks after which he was traded to the Toronto Raptors. He had his college basketball career with the UCLA Bruins of the University of California, Los Angeles. Norman Powell’s Bio, Age

Born Norman W. C. Powell on the 25th day of May 1993, in San Diego, California, the stellar footballer had his high school education at Abraham Lincoln High School in San Diego, California; a school which had lost some of its best athletes following the demolition of its original buildings. However, following its reconstruction between 2003 and 2007, Powell helped rebuild the basketball program of the school.

Among other highlights, he led Lincoln high to two straight CIF San Diego Section 2A championships in 2009 and 2010. The school equally claimed the CIF Division II Boys’ State Championship in 2010 and for his junior season performance, Norman Powell received first-team all-state and Western League Most Valuable Player honors.

The talented youngster also received first-team all-state and league MVP honors in his senior year and he equally led the school to a league title. Showcasing even more skills Young Powell capped his illustrious high school career by winning the San Diego County All-Star Game Dunk Contest in April 2011. By the end of his high school career, Powell was ranked No. 15 among prospective shooting guard recruits in the nation and thus was the toast of several college recruiters. Among several offers, he settled for the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

During his successful 4-year college career with the UCLA Bruins, Powell played in all 141 games averaging 9.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game. He had his best performance in his senior season during which he recorded a team-leading average of 16.4 points per game. His performance earned him first-team All-Pac-12 honors and he was voted first-team and second-team all-district by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) respectively.

NBA Career

Norman Powell was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round of the 2015 NBA Draft as the 46th overall pick. However, he was immediately traded to the Toronto Raptors alongside a 2017 first-round draft pick in exchange for Greivis Vásquez. He signed a contract with the Raptors in July 2015 after which he joined the team for the 2015 NBA Summer League held in Las Vegas. His top-notch performance in the league earned him an All-NBA Summer League First Team selection and he was the only rookie to achieve that feat.

Powell earned ample playing time at the start of the 2015-16 season as veterans Terrence Ross and DeMarre Carroll had been sidelined by injuries. However, he was later assigned to Raptors 905, the D-League affiliate team of the franchise. Among other highlights of his rookie season, Powell was named the Eastern Conference NBA Rookie of the Month in April 2016 after averaging a Conference-leading 15.5 points per game. He finished the season with 5.6 average points and a career-high 2.3 rebounds in 49 appearances. At the 2016 NBA Playoffs, he averaged 3.8 points and 1.5 rebounds per game in 18 appearances.

Norman Powell was featured sparingly during the 2016-17 season as he made only 18 starts in 76 total appearances. However, his scoring average upped to a career-high 8.4 points and 2.2 rebounds. He put up an even better performance at the 2017 playoffs where he recorded 11.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1 steals per game.

In October 2017, Norman Powell penned a $42 million 4-year contract extension with the Toronto Raptors which was billed to take effect with the 2018–19 season. Despite the new contract, Powell’s playing time did not improve in the 2017-18 regular season as he started only 18 games in 70 appearances. His scoring average dipped to 5.5 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. At the 2018 NBA playoffs, he came off the bench in all 6 appearances during which he averaged 2.0 points and 0.3 rebounds per game.

Norman Powell’s parents are Sharon and Norman Powell Sr. He grew up alongside 2 older sisters Joniece and Margret. His mother is a social worker and she raised Norman and his siblings all by herself. There isn’t much information regarding Powell’s biological father, however, he had a father figure in his mother’s brother Raymond Edwards who introduced him to basketball at a young age. Sadly, his uncle Edwards died of cancer before his senior year in high school. In honor of his late uncle, Norman Powell sports a tattoo on his left shoulder with the inscription “Raymond Edwards RIP”.
