Olivier Vernon Bio

Vernon was born Olivier Alexander Vernon on the 7th of October 1990, in Miami, Florida. A first-generation American, he was born to a Swiss-born mother Bernadette Vernon and a Jamaican-born father; Lascelles Vernon. Though Vernon rarely ever speaks of his roots, he frequently prides his mixed ethnicity.

Vernon’s , the legendary British actor who dominated in the mid-20th century across stage, movies, and television. Vernon’s mother Bernadette had chosen the name to honor the actor who passed away in July 1989 about a year before Vernon was born.

Olivier Vernon’s parents raised him in a middle-class neighborhood in Miami working as hard as they could to afford the best possible life for their son. His father Lascelles worked in the Miami Police Department for 25 years before retiring in 2016. His mom, back in the day, worked in a department store in order to bolster her husband’s income.

Though Vernon’s parents worked extra hard to support him, they didn’t neglect the need to discipline their child, instilling in him the value of hard work. He was made to do chores around the house including cleaning and engaging in some type of the yard work.

When Vernon got accepted to Miami’s American High School, he became a member of the school’s football team as a defensive end. The values he had learned from his parents came in handy during high school when Vernon was able to strike the right balance between his football and academic work. Those values have stuck with him all the way and played a part in the level of success he has accomplished today.

Vernon had an amazing high school career and was rated a 4-star athlete by Rivals.com. He committed to the University of Miami where he spent three years playing for their Hurricanes football team. He brought his college career to an end after his junior year, finishing with 51 total tackles (30 solos), including 20.5 for loss, nine sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery.

NFL Career

Vernon declared early for the 2012 NFL Draft and was chosen in the third round, No. 72 overall, by the Miami Dolphins. It was the first time in 8 years that the Dolphins were selecting anyone from the University of Miami after Vernon Carey was selected in 2004. Olivier Vernon went on to play 4 seasons with the side, recording 196 total tackles (143 solos), 29 sacks, three forced fumbles and one touchdown. His first NFL touchdown and only touchdown with the side came in a game against New York Jets on October 28, 2012.

Vernon became a free agent following the end of his contract with the Dolphins. Consequently, he was signed in 2016 to the New York Giants in a 5-year contract worth $85 million with $52.5 million guaranteed. The contract was then the biggest contract given to a defensive end in the league’s history. It was a huge leap from his Miami Dolphins $3.68 million 4-year deal. Vernon proved to be worth the big money in his first season with the side when he recorded a career-high 63 tackles with 8.5 sacks from just 16 games. His performance earned him a berth on the 2016 Second-team All-Pro.
