The man who shares the same name with the most famed and highly prestigious entertainment award, the Academy Award which is better known as the Oscars, Oscar Nunez, is a Cuban-American actor and comedian. He is the creator and executive producer of the Comedy Central series Halfway Home in which he co-starred as the character Eulogio Pla in 2007. He became more prominent with his portrayal as Oscar Martinez, the paper supply accountant on the NBC’s show, The Office.

Oscar Nunez Biography

Born 18 November 1958 in Colon, Cuba to parents who were classmates of Fidel Castro at the University of Havana. His mother was a dentist while his father was a lawyer.

Shortly after his birth, his parents took to migration and moved to Venezuela and later to the United States. They moved to Boston when he was two years old and when he became four, they took their son along with them to Union City, New Jersey which was where he grew up. He is bilingual in English and Spanish.

New York City is the home of the several colleges he attended. They include the Fashion Institute of Technology, the Parsons School of Design for writing and the Magna Institute of Dental Technology where he was certified a dental technician. Oscar was also a member of The Groundlings (an improvisational and sketch comedy troupe school based in Los Angeles, California) and performed in their Sunday Company.

Career

His comedy show kicked off in New York with The Shock of the Funny theatre company where he performed in over 300 shows. He further appeared in theatre in New York and Washington D.C. before he moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1990s. It was there that he joined The Groundlings where he wrote and starred in a production called Smooth Down There.

Oscar Nunez attended the Warner Brothers Comedy Writer’s Workshop and graduated in 1997. Pursuing comedy writing, he entered into competitions such as the ABC Latino Writers Project in 1999 where he finished a finalist.

He appeared on the Match Game show in 1998 but was not a winner. Oscar was a stand-in on The Man Show for the co-host, Adam Carolla.

Apart from his role in The Office for which he became more famous, his other television credits include The District, 24, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Malcolm in the Middle, Reno 911!, Mad TV, Grounded for Life, Still Standing, The Bad Girl’s Guide.

Oscar Nunez has also appeared in films and his works include The Italian Job, Reno 911! Miami, When Do We Eat?, The Proposal, Prosecuting Case Anthony, Fred: The Movie, Glory Road, The 33, Without Men.

He appears as a regular in the comedy series, People of Earth in 2016 and in 2018, portrayed Agent Cole Perez, the State Farm Insurance agent in a series of commercials.

He was one of the eight judges in the 2010 Miss USA Contest and is also noted for being a talent scout on Last Comic Standing. The Office actor co-starred in the short-lived USA Network comedy series Benched. In the course of his works, he has appeared alongside , , , Mos Def, and Edward Norton.

He tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend, actress, comedian and director, Ursula Whittaker on 21 May 2011, a few months after their engagement on December 17, 2010. The twosome welcomed their first child, a daughter who they named August Luce Nunez, on October 4, 2012. He was previously married to Carla.

Ursula grew up in Los Angeles where she was born. She has a background in dance, acting, and writing and graduated from the University of Southern California with a BA in American Literature and a minor in Film/TV. Like her husband, she was also a member of a theatre and amassed most of her acting experience there. The theatre group she belonged to was Theatre Neo in Los Angeles.

She wrote and performed stand-up comedy for some years and has had her work as a monologist published in The Los Angeles Times Magazine. Her work credits include Veronica Mars, Veep, Prime Suspect, Malcolm in the Middle, A Number’s Game, the medical dramas ER, and Grey’s Anatomy.
