Philip Alfred Mickelson popularly known as Phil Mickelson was born on the 16th day of June 1970 to father – Philip Mickelson, a former naval aviator and an airline pilot and mother – Mary Mickelson. Phil was brought up in Scottsdale, Arizona. His interest in golf was triggered as soon as he started walking, a 3-year-old Phil was seen regularly, running from home on his way to the golf course.
In his teens, he was already in the amateur golfing games. He recorded 34 wins in the San Diego Junior Golf Association titles where he had to use his father’s job as a pilot to score tickets to his various tournaments. Even his mum had to take up a second job to be able to assist him in paying for his American Junior Golf Association play, where he won the AJGA Rolex Player of the Year awards three consecutive times and also, he bagged a full scholarship to Arizona State University.
Phil started his golfing lessons at home under the tutelage of his father even before he started school. As a commercial pilot, Phil’s father worked shifts which gave him ample opportunity to tutor his son in golf many times in a week and on an extensive practice area in their San Diego backyard, young Phil sharpened his golfing skills. Even though he was right-handed, he got used to swinging with the left hand because he watches his father do the same thing. He eventually became the first left handed swinger to win the US Amateur title in 1990.
Phil graduated from San Diego High School in 1998 and later proceeded to the Arizona State University in Tempe through a scholarship which he won via the golf games and consequently, he became the face of amateur golf in the US and was able to capture three individual championships and also three Haskins Awards (1991 to 1993) as a distinguished collegiate golfer. The celebrity golfer has three individual NCAA championship to his credit, a record which he shares with another veteran golfer Ben Crenshaw. In 1990, Phil Mickelson led the Sun Devils to the NCAA title and won 16 tournaments through the course of his collegiate career.
Phil bagged the major championship for the first time in his thirteenth years on the PGA Tour in 2004, he grabbed the victory in the masters with an 18-foot (5.5) birdie putt on the final hole. His runner-up at a stroke back was Ernie Els. The two veterans played in different duos in the concluding round and traded eagles and birdies on back nine.
Phil Mickelson is ranked as the third golf player with a left-handed swing to win a major, a feat which he shares with Sir Bob Charles a New Zealander who bagged The Open Championship in 1993. Another left-handed swinger is the Canadian Mike Weir who won The Masters in the year 2003. The fact that Weir is right handed but can effectively swing with his left hand makes him more similar to Phil than the others. The fourth left-handed swinger is the renowned Bubba Watson who is a natural southpaw. Watson bagged the Masters championship in 2012 and 2014 respectively.
