Rafael Devers is a professional athlete and a Major League Baseball player. He is the third baseman for the Boston Red Sox and considered the best in batting left-handed and throwing right-handed on the baseball field.

Devers ranked sixth overall among the top 50 international prospects and was reportedly considered the best left-handed hitter in the international market by some scouts. At age 21, he became the youngest player to hit a grand slam in a Red Sox–Yankees game.

Born as Rafael Devers Calcaño, the third baseman’s age is determined by his date of birth which is October 24, 1996. His birthplace is Sánchez Ramírez Province, the Dominican Republic where he was raised.

There is no information about his parents yet, but he has a cousin, José Devers who is also a professional baseball player. His interest in sports began at a very young age and by age 16, in August 2013, the Boston Red Sox signed Rafael Devers as a free agent.

Career

As one who ranked sixth overall among the top 50 international prospects, the Red Sox signed Devers as a 16-year-old free agent to a $1.5 million deal. He started out with the minor leagues and debuted with the Dominican Summer League Red Sox rookie club on May 31, 2014.

While with the league, he played in all 28 games, reaching the base almost in all the play. He made .467 batting average and slugged .800 in eight games and continued to up his value as he led the DSL Sox with three home runs, a slash line of .337/.445/.538 and 21 RBI.

Devers was promoted to the Gulf Coast League Red Sox of the Rookie Class GCL. It was acknowledged that his .983 on-base plus slugging statistic was a rare occurrence at the DSL level and his .533 slugging average surpasses the mark for an everyday player for the Red Sox since 2005.

His overall score for the 2014 season was .322/.404/.506 line 57 RBI and 7 home runs in 70 games across two minor league levels. He also tied for third in the GCL with 36 RBI, as well as ranked among the top 10 in .312 batting average, propeling his MLB’s ranking of Red Sox prospects from No. 13 to No. 5.

Devers was named to the 2014 GCL Postseason All-Stars team to finish the season. He was selected for the South Atlantic League All-Star Game after joining the Low Class A Greenville Drive in 2015. It was later announced that the Dominican would be listed among the World Team roster in the All-Star Futures Game

This was followed by an invitation from the Boston Red Sox to participate on its 2016 spring training, after which he got promoted to High-A Salem Red Sox to start the regular season. At the time, his MBL rating as a Red Sox’s player skyrocketed to No. 2 and No. 14 overall.

The 2017 season saw his promotion to the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox on July 24, 2017, where he made 2 home runs and hit .400 in 9 games. Meanwhile, he started the season’s game with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs and completed 18 home runs in 77 games.

The release of the franchise former player, Pablo Sandoval, created room for Devers promotion to the Boston Red Sox. He collected his first major league hit, a home run in the game against the Seattle Mariners. He finished the regular season (2017) batting .284 with 10 home runs and 30 RBIs in 58 games. He had a .906 fielding percentage starting in 56 games at third base.

Devers hit his first career grand slam on April 18, in the game against the Los Angeles Angels to mark his the 2018 season as the Red Sox’s regular third baseman. This was followed by a second grand slam in the match against New York Yankees on June 30, making him the youngest player to hit a grand slam in a Red Sox–Yankees game that night, at age 21 and 249 days

His game winning 3-run home in the 6th inning in Game 5 of the 2018 ALCS became a deciding factor in sending his teamto the World Series.
