Richard Jenkins Bio

The film icon Jenkins was born on May 4th, 1947 in DeKalb, Illinois where he attended DeKalb High School and later went to Illinois Wesleyan University to study Drama. After he graduated from university, he moved to Rohde Island and started working with Trinity Repertory Company which landed him a role in the movie Feasting with Panthers released in 1974.

With the success of his debut film, the actor was able to land other roles in various movies during that period which include: Hannah and Her Sisters, The Witches of Eastwick, Sea of Love, How to Make an American Quilt, Flirting with Disaster, Snow Falling On Cedars, There’s Something About Mary and Outside Providence.

 

In 2001, Jenkins landed the role of Nataniel Fisher in the series Six Feet Under which ran till 2005. Other major films he featured in are Me, Myself & Irene, Say It Isn’t So, Hall Pass and Three Stooges. He was cast in the movie created by the three Coen Brothers titled: The Man Who Wasn’t There released 2001, Intolerable Cruelty in 2003 and the 2008 film Burn After Reading.

The actor is also known for his role as an FBI Director in the film Grace in The Kingdom in 2007 and, he was featured in Step Brothers. His lead role was in the movie The Visitor released in 2008. Other major films he has been in so far include Dear John which he acted alongside actress , Eat Pray Love, the horror film The Cabin in the woods, the popular action movies Jack Reacher and White House Down. His most recent work is the 2017 Kong: Skull Island and The Shape of Water in which he played Giles.

Awards and Nominations

The actor’s famous Six Feet Under TV series landed him nominations from Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance in a drama sitcom, Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Actor, Screen Actors Guild Award and a Satellite Award. He received his first Academy Award nomination in 2008 for best actor in the film The Visitor. Nominations from other institutions for the same film include Broadcast Film Critics Association, Chicago Film Critics Association Award, Dallas–Fort Worth Film Critics Association and the Online Film Critics Society Award.

He was also nominated by Independent Spirit for Best Male Lead and the Screen Actors Guild. The man won Best Cast and Best Actor award from the Boston Society of Film Critics in 2008. For the 2010 film Let Me In he won Best Supporting Actor form Fangoria Chainsaw and a Primetime Emmy Award in 2014 for Outstanding Lead Actor in the drama sitcom Olive Kitteridge alongside nominations from Critics’ Choice Television and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a mini-sitcom.

In 2015, he landed another nomination from the Independent Spirit for Best Supporting Male Actor in the movie Bone Tomahawk. His most recent awards and nominations are for the movie The Shape of Water for which he has won St. Louis Gateway Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actor, the Online Film Critics Society Award for Best Supporting Actor and Best Actor from Dallas–Fort Worth Film Critics Association. Nominations he has received for this movie include Best Supporting Actor from Austin Film Critics Association Award and other Best Supporting Actor nominations from Critics’ Choice Movie, Detroit Film Critics Society, San Francisco Film Critics Circle, Houston Film Critics Society and a Golden Globe nomination. He also got nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role by the Screen Actors Guild.

The movie star is also a recipient of 3 special awards from the San Diego Film Critics Society for the movies Step Brothers, The Tale of Despereaux and Burn After Reading.

The movie star has been happily married to Sharon R Fredrick with whom he tied the knot on  August 23, 1969.  The couple has two children named Sarah Pamela and  Andrew Dale. His mother Mary Elizabeth who was a housewife died in 2007 while his dad Dale Stevens Jenkins a dentist died in 1997.
