The actor’s journey to gaining millionaire status began after he dropped out of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois in 1963. He did so in order to launch a career as an actor and model.

Roundtree’s first modeling job came after he was scouted by the founder and director of Ebony Fashion Fair, Eunice W. Johnson. After gaining fame from appearing in the fair, he moved to model products such as Salem Cigarettes and Duke Hair Grease. By 1967, the model joined the new established Negro Ensemble Company and went on to play a number of roles. His first and most notable role was that of boxing legend Jack Johnson in the company’s production of The Great White Hope.

The original Shaft actor also appeared in the film that received generally positive reviews and opened number-one at the box office, making $107.2 million from a production budget of $46 million. While it is not clear how much he was paid to appear in the remake, it is believed that Roundtree was handsomely rewarded, enough to ensure that he was willing to return to set if a sequel was to be made.
