Brief History

Rick Fox (real name Ulrich Alexander) is a Canadian-Bahamian who was born in Toronto, Canada on the 24th of July 1969. He is a former NBA player, actor, businessman and entrepreneur. At a very young age, he moved with his family to the Bahamas, the native home of his father. Over there, he attended the Kingsway Academy High School in Nassau. While in school, he developed an interest in sports. He thus joined the school’s basketball team “The Saints” where he honed his skills.

In Warsaw Indiana, Fox also played high school basketball and was projected to have a very impressive senior season just in a space of two years. In 1986, however, he had eligibility issues as the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) ruled on his case stating that his eligibility as a high school student had expired (due to completing eight semesters between the Bahamas and Indiana). As a result of this, he was blacklisted from playing any further IHSAA games. Regardless of the setback of not playing his senior season, he was voted onto the Indiana All-Star team in 1987.

The highlight of his early career was experienced when he went on to play for the University of North Carolina where he led the “Tar Heels” to the NCAA Final in 1991.

Venture Into Acting

In the University of North Carolina, Fox earned a degree in Radio, Television and Motion Pictures. In 1994, he landed a role in a film called Blue Chips where he starred as a member of the Texas Western basketball team. He subsequently featured alongside veteran actress Whoopi Goldberg in the 1996 film Eddie, where he played the role of a slumping basketball payer who receives help from a fan. In 1998, he featured as a ladies man in He Got Game, a film directed by Spike Lee.

His major acting break came in late 1997 when he received his biggest role playing a prison inmate, Jackson Vahue on the HBO prison drama Oz.  He played a very successful basketball player who was imprisoned based on sexual assault charges. The series aired between 1997-2003, with Fox appearing in 11 episodes. Till date, he has featured in a lot of prominent series and movies which has increased his popularity as well as his fan base.

Business And Investments

Fox has kept it steady throughout his career. He learned to plan ahead for the future while he had the opportunity as he has previously witnessed great athletes and successful celebrities who went broke as a result of poor management of their finances. He is thus currently a partner at Vision Venture Partners, where he spearheaded the private equity move into professional sports. The firm provides strategic guidance, creative direction and business development support to each of VVP’s portfolio companies. Also, he owns the premier esports franchise “Echo Fox.”
