Mainz 05 

Baku signed with Mainz 05 II for the 2017–18 season, making his Regionalliga Südwest debut on July 30, 2017 in a 3–0 home triumph over FSV Frankfurt. On September 16, 2017, Baku made his reserve team debut, scoring Mainz’s second goal in a 2–0 home win over Kickers Offenbach in the 82nd minute. On December 19, 2017, Baku made his professional debut for Mainz 05 in the 2017–18 DFB-Pokal, starting in a 3–1 home win over VfB Stuttgart. On April 29, 2018, he made his Bundesliga debut in a 3–0 home triumph over RB Leipzig. In the 90th minute, Baku sealed Mainz’s win by scoring the game’s last goal.

VfL Wolfsburg

2020–21 Season

Baku signed a five-year contract with fellow Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg on October 1, 2020, for an unknown amount. Three days later, in a 0–0 tie with Augsburg, he made his club debut, replacing Renato Steffen, who had tested positive for COVID-19. On November 1, he scored his first goal for the club in a 1–1 tie with Hertha Berlin.

In his debut season with the club, Baku made an impression, earning a spot in the Bundesliga Team of the Year. After 31 matchdays, he had a league-leading 2583 strenuous runs, including a league-leading 993 sprints, more than 150 more than the second-place finisher. He had 82 crosses, 32 shots, and 305 successful tackles to go with his six goals and four assists.

2021-22 Season 

Baku scored in Wolfsburg’s first match of the 2021–22 season, a 3–1 win over fourth-tier club SC Preußen Münster in the DFB-Pokal first round. On the other hand, Wolfsburg, employed a total of six substitutions, when only five were permitted, and were disqualified as a result of Preußen Münster’s objection. Baku scored again two weeks later in a league triumph over Hertha Berlin after coming from behind.

International career

Baku has represented Germany in the U18, U19, U20, and U21 national teams. On November 8, 2020, Baku received his first call-up to the German senior team. On November 11, 2020, he made his professional debut against the Czech Republic in a friendly match. He helped Germany U21 win the UEFA Under-21 Euro 2021 on June 6, 2021, by assisting on the lone goal against Portugal.
