Robert Kelley was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 3, 1992, to African-American parents Darriel Kelley and her husband Robert Thompson. He grew up in the 9th Ward district of New Orleans and in 2005 his family lost their home as a result of Hurricane Katrina’s effect in the New Orleans. Kelley’s nationality is American and he is of African-American ethnic descent.

Kelley attended and completed his high school education at the New Orleans Walker High School situated in the west bank of Algiers, New Orleans. While he was there, his love for football led him to join the school team. He played the position of a running back for the team. Apart from football, he also participated in track and fields events.

After his graduation, he enrolled at Tulane University where he played college football from 2011 to 2015. Playing alongside Orleans Darkwa in the backfield for Tulane; Kelley recorded 16 receptions with 178 receiving yards and two touchdowns with 332 rushing yards in his freshman year. In his sophomore year, he improved at his game for the Green Wave, having a record of 46 receptions, four touchdowns, 286 rushing yards and 340 receiving yards which were his team-high that season. As a junior, he notched three touchdowns, 18 receptions, 420 rushing yards and 176 receiving yards in 2013.

Kelley missed out of the 2014 season because he was arrested for an assault on his fellow student. The student also alleged that Robert made away with his bicycle. The case caused Robert to miss the whole of 2014. After the charges were dropped, he returned to the team for the 2015 season. Finishing his career in 2015, Kelley saw action in 12 games and he recorded 232 rushing yards, six receptions, a touchdown, and 33 receiving yards.

NFL Career and Stats

Scoring two touchdowns against the Seattle Seahawks in their week 9 win, Robert incurred an injury which got him on the injured reserve for the rest of the season. He completed the season with three receiving touchdowns and 194 rushing yards.

While the 2018 preseason games are underway, the Redskins rushing line hasn’t been so efficient following the absence of Chris Thompson and Samaje Perine who are still recovering from injuries. This means a great responsibility for the Washington rumbler Kelley. He will not only get more playing time; but also the chance to prove himself as a bell-cow rusher for his team.
