Rodrigo Hernández Cascante, also known as Rodri or Rodrigo, is a Spanish professional footballer who currently plays for Premier League side Manchester City and the Spain national team.

Rodri’s Career

In 2006, he began playing football for Rayo Majadahonda’s youth team. Rodri, joined Atlético Madrid’s youth setup in 2007 at the age of 11 after leaving CF Rayo Majadahonda. He was released in 2013 owing to a “lack of physical strength,” however he later joined Villarreal CF.

Rodri made his senior debut for the reserves on 7 February 2015, while still a youngster, coming on as a late substitution in a 3–1 away win against RCD Espanyol B in Segunda División B. He got his debut start 15 days later, winning 2–0 at Real Zaragoza B.

Rodri made his first-team debut on 17 December 2015, starting in a 2–0 home win over SD Huesca in the Copa del Rey that season. On 17 April 2016, he made his La Liga debut as a second-half substitute for Denis Suárez in a 2–1 away loss to Rayo Vallecano.

Rodri’s contract was extended until 2022 on December 4, 2017, after he had already established himself as a regular. On 18 February 2018, he scored his first goal in the Spanish top flight, the opening in a 1–1 away draw against RCD Espanyol.

Atlético Madrid

Rodri returned to Atlético on May 24, 2018, after the club secured an agreement with Villarreal for his transfer. He agreed to terms with Real Madrid on a five-year contract worth around €20 million and a further €5 million in variables. On 15 August, he made his UEFA Super Cup debut at Tallinn, Estonia, playing the opening 71 minutes of a 4–2 extra-time win over city rivals Real Madrid.

Manchester City
On July 3, 2019, Rodri’s release clause was satisfied by Manchester City. And allowing him to buy out the remaining of his contract with Atlético and leave the club. Manchester City paid a new record transfer fee for the transfer. He agreed to a five-year contract.

Rodri made his debut in the 2019 FA Community Shield on August 4 at Wembley Stadium, playing the entire 90 minutes as City defeated Liverpool on penalties following a 1–1 draw. Six days later, he made his Premier League debut against West Ham United in a 5–0 away triumph, and on 14 September, he scored his first goal as a consolation in a 3–2 away loss to Norwich City.

It was revealed in October 2019 that he would be out for a month because of a hamstring injury. City won the EFL Cup for the third time in a straight on March 1, 2020, at Wembley Stadium, defeating Aston Villa 2–1. Rodri headed in City’s second goal from a corner, which proved to be the game-winner. Rodri scored City’s first goal of the game, a penalty, in a 3–0 triumph over Tottenham Hotspur on February 13, 2021. He also scored the game-winning goal in a dramatic triumph over Arsenal.

International Career
After representing Spain at the under-16, under-19, and under-21 levels, Rodri was called up to the full squad for two friendlies against Germany and Argentina on March 16, 2018. He made his debut five days later, replacing Thiago Alcântara late in Germany’s 1–1 tie in Düsseldorf. Rodri was named to Luis Enrique’s 24-man squad for UEFA Euro 2020 on May 24, 2021.
