Ronald Darby is an American football player who plays in the National Football League (NFL) for the Philadelphia Eagles. The cornerback joined the Philadelphia-based football franchise on August 11, 2017, through a trade that saw his previous team, the Buffalo Bills, exchanging him for wide receiver Jordan Matthew in a conditional 2019 seventh-round draft pick.

Ronald Darby Biography

Darby was born on the 2nd of January 1994, to his father Ronald Darby Sr in Oxon Hill, a suburb of Washington, D.C. Maryland, USA, this is also where he began to work on his dream of becoming a professional American football player.

Darby went to Potomac High School where he joined the school’s team, the Wolverines and played in different positions such as the defense, offense, and special teams. He finally found his root on defense and joined the Wolverines’ secondary afterward. At such a young age, he was already acquainted with success as he was marked as Sports Illustrated High School All-American in 2011 and was a USA Today.

In 2012, Darby was featured in the year’s Under Armour All-American Game and while playing as a junior, he tallied 3 interceptions and defended 8 pass breakups. The more he played with his high school team, the more popular he became. He gained Rivals.com’s recognition as a four-star recruit and was ranked as the No. 2 cornerback prospect in his class just after he ran a 4.37-second 40-yard dash.

Darby’s college football career was no less a success. He joined Florida State in 2012, he became part of its defense and recorded 18 tackles with seven passes. The season ended with him earning the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year honors and Freshman All-American. Darby won the BCS National Championship game in 2013, as a sophomore just after playing 14 games with 9 starts and making 14 tackles and 2 interceptions. After ending his junior season in 2014, with 43 tackles in 14 games, Ronald Darby made his way to the National Football League.

Darby’s NFL Career

Ronald Darby joined the NFL draft in 2015 and at that time he was just a year above twenty. While coming out of the Florida State, he was named the second-best cornerback, just behind P.J. Williams who now plays for New Orleans Saint of the NFL. Darby also was ranked the seventh-best by NFLDraftScout.com.

Darby’s first professional journey was with the Buffalo Bills located at the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolis. He was selected by the professional team in a 2nd round (50th overall) of the NFL 2015 Draft. His first contract was signed on May 19, 2015. It was a four-year contract worth $4.56 million with $1.58 million as signing bonus and $2.17 million guaranteed. Darby made his season debut against the Indianapolis Colts and recorded 2 pass deflections, 6 combined tackles, and one tackle which contributed to his team’s 27–14 win against the Colts. He finished his rookie season with 21 pass deflections, 68 combined tackles, 2 interceptions in 15 games with 15 starts. That season, he was named the AFC Defensive Rookie of the Month for September and Pro Football Focus’ Defensive Rookie of the Year. His 2016 season ended with 12 pass deflections in 14 games, 69 combined tackles, and 12 starts, after playing against such teams as the Baltimore Ravens, the Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars and the Pittsburgh Steelers

 

Darby moved on to play with the Philadelphia Eagles on August 11, 2017, after the Bills traded him for wide receiver Jordan Matthews in the NFL 2018 third-round draft pick and unfortunately, he was ruled out for about six weeks after he dislocated his ankle in the second quarter of his first game.

Darby returned in the eleventh week, in a match against the Dallas Cowboys and made his first interception with the Eagles. His first season ended with 9 passes defended, 3 interceptions and 34 tackles. When the Eagles reached the Super Bowl LII, which would determine the NFL champion for the 2017 season, Darby made 2 passes and 4 tackles in a game against the New England Patriots.
