Biography

Rupert Grint was born Rupert Alexander Lloyd Grint in Harlow, Essex, England, on August 24, 1988, to his parents; Joanne (née Parsons), a homemaker, and Nigel Grint, a racing memorabilia dealer. He is the first of five siblings. The others are James, Georgina, Samantha, and Charlotte.

Grint attended Richard Hale School, in Hertfordshire. He was very popular in school due to his bright red hair which earned him the nickname Ginge, short for ginger. His great-grandfather also nicknamed him “Copper Knob” because of his hair color.

During his time in school, Grint took interest in theatre and was staged in a number of plays. It was said that his ambition to become an actor was fueled by the presence of the Leavesden Film Studios which was located near his home. He performed in his school’s production of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales, featuring as Rumplestilskin. He further joined a local theatre group called Top Hat Stage and Screen School where he was cast as a fish in Noah’s Ark and a donkey in another nativity play.

Rupert Grint continued performing well into his secondary school days until one day while watching a BBC children news programme, he saw that his favorite book, Harry Potter, was being made into a film and that there was open casting for the roles. He quickly made a video of himself talking about how the role of Ron was best suited for him and why he deserved to be given a chance. His attempt was successful and Grint was further invited for additional auditioning before he was given the role, despite never having acted professionally before.

Grint, along with and had to put a pause to school to shoot the Harry Potter films. They were, however, tutored for four hours every day on set which is the minimum legal requirement for child actors. In the summer of 2004, just after the release of the third installment of the Harry Potter film series; Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Grint took his General Certificate of Secondary Education exams (GCSE) and completed his formal education.

Since starting his acting career as an aspiring wizard, Grint has featured in a number of other films, including Thunderpants in 2002, Driving Lessons in 2006, Cherrybomb in 2008, and Wild Target in 2010 among many others. After the Harry Potter series ended, he went back to his roots by doing some stage acting, as well as narrating, voice over and TV roles. He has also won a couple of awards for both his Harry Potter roles and other works.
